Summer Nights
Chapter Sixteen
*Niall's P.O.V*
When we reached the desolate playground, I stopped and let her jump off.
"Thanks," she said, her brown eyes alight.
"No problem. Race you to the swings!" I shouted, starting for the structure before I'd even finished my sentence.
"Not fair!" she yelled, racing behind me. I laughed, until I saw her pull ahead of me.
"What?" I exclaimed, reaching the swings.
"I win," she jokingly declared, sitting down on one.
"That's because I let you," I fake scoffed, taking a seat next to her. She laughed as the rest of the boys came running to the park.
"I call the monkey bars!" Louis shouted, already hoisting himself up. Niall and Zayn went to the sandpit, and Liam followed Louis.
I heard a soft chuckle to my left, and I saw Holly was using her phone to record Louis. Feeling spy-like, I snaked an arm out and nabbed her iPhone while it was still rolling.
"Niall!" she yelled, trying to grab it from me. I smirked, focusing the camera on her.
"Say something," I said, holding the device in her face.
"Give it back," she lunged for it, and I pulled it away at the last moment.
"Niall," she whined while I maniacally laughed.
"Wait! I got it! Say I'm the best friend ever!" I shouted. She rolled her eyes at me, but laughed. I made sure the camera had enough light, and gestured for her to go.
"Hi, I'm Holly, on my own phone, but that's a minority. Anyways, Niall James Horan is my most awesome best friend ever, and I might even consider giving him some of my food," she said, grinning.
"WHAT IS THIS?" A loud voice exclaimed. Startled, both of us turned to see Louis practically flying toward us.
"Do I spy a camera?" Holly shot up and took off running across the park.
"If you want to be in the video, you gotta catch me!" she shouted as Louis started chasing her.
I got up, putting her phone in my pocket, and jogged after them, wondering if Louis was as fast as Holly. As I quickly discovered, the answer is no. He was panting after the first seventy meters and she was casually running like she did this every day. Well, she might've; I don't know.
Since Louis had given up the chase, I began to run the second leg of the relay. I was right behind her and she was still going strong. Suddenly, I tripped over a rock and crashed into Holly. She fell underneath me, and I landed over her, my stomach facing her. My breath momentarily stopped as I noticed the lack of space between us. Her eyes widened, and we stayed there, just staring at each other, my chest heaving.
"Well, this is awkward. . ." she finally mumbled to herself. I hurriedly got up, offering my hand to her. She took it, and we both coincidentally ran our hands through our hair at the same time. I'm pretty sure both of our faces were unbelievably red, but it was too dark to clearly see.
"Where are you?" Louis shouted. She looked down, as we were still facing each other, and I cleared my throat.
"Coming!" I yelled back. Both of us nervously laughed off that awkward moment, and regained our carefree attitude. All that was replaying through my head was the fact that we were super close during those twenty-five seconds. Like, kissing-zone close. I should've kissed her. . .
