That Was When We Were 7
Chappie 9 - It's the new air
I smiled and squatted her hand from my ear; she used to tickle my ear to wake me up when I was little. Guess I’m still little to her. “Morning mum” I mumbled and heaved myself off the sweaty leather chair.I rubbed my eyes and looked down to see a little puddle of what looked like saliva.
“Did I really do that?” I looked back at mum and received a small chuckle and a nod “Remind me never to sleep in front of a guy for more than 10 hours.” I laughed and reached out my hand for help. She rolled her eyes and pulled me out of the chair making sure that no one was behind her in the process.
“Where’s Caleb? And is Kai gone already?” I asked and looked around the plane; there were only a few people, literally, on board but I think they were flying to the next destination and then there was the chatty staff.
“He’s gone to get our suitcases from the checked baggage carousel and Kai left he told me to tell you he said goodbye and hopes to see you later in England” she let go of me and combed her hair back before resting her hands on my shoulders “we better get going we are practically the last people on board.”
“Righteo let’s go then” I yelled and linked arms with her “oh wait forgot about the other stuff” I stood on my tiptoes and opened the small cabin above me and pulled out mum’s handbag before returning to her arm and attempting to walk down the aisle with her trailing behind me. This is the kind of relationship I have with my mum, she is my best friend and along with that she’s my mum as well. It’s kinda like a bonus!
“Thank you” I said to the remaining staff waiting by the door “Thank you for flying with us enjoy your stay” said the blonde lady as she made a gentle hand gesture to the tunnel that enters into the airport.
Ah this exciting! I wonder how high school will be since I’m graduating there I mean well ‘here’ now, I only have one year which makes no sense as to why we moved but it’s my mum, I can’t change her mind no matter how hard I tried. Unless I used bribery against her than usually things can change.
“So was the trip comfortable for you mum?” I asked and smiled “Yeah it was pretty comfortable, they had nice movies and the food was reasonable” she replied and patted my arm “except the toilets smelt pretty bad and they were small I mean look at this bum of mine!” she shrieked and slapped her behind. I laughed and looked at her.
I just noticed from how close we were that she is starting to get fine little wrinkles near her eyes, note to self: even though I am growing up don’t forget mum is growing old. I nodded to myself and received a confused glance from mum.
“Mum…why did we move exactly?” I mumbled having constant flashbacks.
<<FLASHBACK>>
“Hey mum I’m back! How are you?” I yelled as I walked through the door and chucked my bag and folder onto the lounge. I took my shoes off and rushed to the fridge pulling out the carton of milk and pouring into a tall glass and adding a straw just for the fun of it.
“Honey can you come here for a second we need to talk” mum’s serious but slightly excited voice floated into the kitchen and I followed it to her small study quickly drinking the milk at the rim of the glass before I took small steps up the stairs.
“Coming!” I yelled drinking from the straw and taking the first right and pushing the door open to reveal a tired and exhausted mum sitting in a large wheelie chair holding a large piece of paper and an older brother wearing nothing but underwear sitting on the floor holding a few more sheets of paper in his hand.
I looked between mum and Caleb before landing on the sheets of paper. Worry filled my head. Did mum lose her job? Did Caleb lose his position for college? Did somebody…pass away? All of these thoughts flew around, sharp pains stabbed the sides of my head and I quickly rubbed my temples hoping that it was just the thoughts and that I wasn’t getting sick.
“Sweetie, it looks like we are going to have to move back home” mum whispered and looked at me, her eyes full of excitement now but just that small hint of concern in her voice gave me a sinking feeling in my stomach. Moving? What kind of moving? As in moving houses into another suburb or moving…moving.
“We are moving to another country Libs, we are moving back to England. Your home town” mum finally spoke up answering the question as if she already read my mind. I nodded slowly taking it all in, there must be some purpose…I hope it is a good one though.
“I’m sorry hun, it’s for work and also for Caleb’s career and maybe even a good push start to your future as well” she smiled and patted Caleb’s arm. Caleb gave me a nod and a reassuring smile ‘it’s going to be okay’ his eyes told me.
<<FLASHBACK ENDS>>
Maybe it isn’t going to be too bad? Should I change myself a bit before entering grade 12? Become a new Liberty, not the old soccer obsessed maniacal girl who would cry if someone bought a fridge full of food for her?
…….nah.
