That Was When We Were 7

Chappie 10 - Airport

“We moved sweetie because I got a promotion but it means having to move here, and Caleb thinks it’s a good idea for all of us to go and he wants to work here, he reckons that the marks he earned are twice better in England” she giggled looking back at the tunnel.

“Caleb’s like that mum, I’m pretty sure you know that by now” I laughed. He made it look so easy just leaving his mates like that, I became so used to Australian culture. The heat in summer, the large barren lands when you go further down to areas like Canberra, finding out stupid things foreigners say such as supposedly we ride kangaroos to school and they roam freely everywhere which is totally absurd. Not true guys don’t believe it!

I heaved a sigh, I’m sooooo tireeeddd. I think I was feeling the jet lag take over me now. Woozy woozy whoooo…cheese. “C’mon Miss Steath you are a very tired child, we’ll be home soon and you can hop straight to bed I promise” Mum whispered and hung tighter to my arm reassuringly. I nodded dozing off whilst walking and hoping that mum would actually guide me correctly and not forget that I am attached to her arm and make me walk into a pole.

I sighed imagining a comfy bed waiting for me at home, soft bed, warm blankets and plush toys gathered everything was just perfect. Honestly I pondered on the thought of how big this airport could possibly be because it felt like we were walking for ages and I wasn’t being literal on that term, continuously bumping into people and managing to mumble out and apology before snuggling just a little deeper into mums shoulder.

“Hi mum, I have the luggage. Is that Libs?” A deep husky voice that could only resemble my brother greeted mum. “Yes, I didn’t expect her to be this tired though” she whispered. Her fingertips lightly touching the surface of my skin, I presumed she was removing the hair from my face.

A long sigh erupted and I heard a clunk. "She looks like a deceased monkey" Caleb laughed. I groaned trying to get the loud talking and noises of the airport away from my ears which is utterly impossible. I opened my eyes slightly taking in the large landscape around me. Everything was humungous! People scurrying everywhere with bags and suitcases, kids screaming and running around with the parents hot on their trails, people on phones or dropping food everywhere overall just absolute chaos.

It scared me a bit how different this place was compared to Australia. I wanted to go back regretting saying it was okay, regretting leaving Adam, regretting everything in total. Were they all going to miss me? I hope so. I’m missing them more than it seems when I said a simple goodbye to them all.

I rubbed my eyes taking in the loud noise and finally stopped leaning on mum before I broke her shoulder, literally. I yawned and stretched. I touched my toes and swung around a bit before finally feeling comfortable. I watched Caleb return with a large trolley obviously for the suitcases.

“Can I have one of those?” I smiled and picked mums and my suitcase and heaved them onto the trolley. “Yeah totally Libs” Caleb rolled his eyes putting the remaining luggage on. I swear something caught Caleb’s eye because he totally missed the trolley when he was putting mums handbag into the tiny compartment.

I followed Caleb’s eye direction and noticed a pretty girl on the phone. She had long blonde hair, waist high denim shorts, a tight red top and a black and white striped business jacket not to mention those huge red heels. She seemed reasonable but I wasn’t surprised about Caleb noticing her I mean look at that outfit she is wearing! Honestly.

“Hey hello Caleb” I clicked my fingers in front of his eyes trying to get his attention. “Yah” he said slowly turning to me and finally placing mum’s bag into the compartment. “Somebody’s got a littly crushy wushy” I teased. “You’re such an idiot Liberty” he smiled nudging my shoulder and grabbing hold of the trolley already deep in thought.

“Kids I need the bathroom do any of you need it as well?” mum asked straightening her supposed ironed shirt when really it looked like she had some sort of fun. “I’ll go in case” I decided trailing behind mum with Caleb and the trolley driving beside me.

“Stay Caleb mind the trolley we’ll be back and then you can go too” I said quickly before slipping into the bathroom with mum giving Caleb thumbs up before turning the corner. The bathroom to summarise in one word was quite classy. They had motion signal sinks and soap dispensers to huge mirrors with multi-coloured tiles then to toilets that were pure white. Because toilets can be cool too…

I huffed and waited in line, there was a long queue but that can be expected in an airport except that people sure were taking their damn time. The line slowly got shorter till mum was now in the toilet and now it was my go. I did my business yaddy yadda and washed my hands fixing the scruffiness and puffiness that my hair tried to theme and put it back into a fish plait. I dried my hands under the hand dryer and went outside.

Caleb was doing something on his phone but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a game after all what could he do here using that phone? He can’t really call or text anyone we practically destroyed our sim cards together...

I walked up to him taking the phone off him “Hey what was that for?” he grunted trying to snatch the phone back. “Toi-let” I said and shooed him off in the opposite direction. I opened up Fruit Ninja excited that I finally get to play it. I.love.it.

“Slice that little bitch” I murmured slicing the fruits that appeared on the screen. “Aarrhh bomb” removing my finger off the screen and slicing the other fruit before it disappeared. I took a quick peek at mum returning and turned my attention back to the screen.

“Technology already?” Mum sighed and resting against the trolley. “Caleb got to it first! Then I took it so yeah” I giggled eyes concentrated and fingers poised to slice.

“You kids are so troublesome” mum sighed tapping her head. “You love us” I exaggerated looking up at mum. She chuckled patting my arm.

“Mum where will we be sleeping tonight? I mean like, how could all our furniture be ready and stuff?” I asked watching the fruits fly faster across the screen.

“You will have to wait and see” she grinned a small sigh escaped her lips as Caleb made his way towards us.

“So you have the keys and everything? Already!? Crap I lost” I said chucking Caleb’s phone towards him. Mum pulled out the keys from her pocket and jangled them around. “The real estate sent them ages ago through mail so that we can go straight there when we arrived in England” a proud smile tugged at the corners of her lips.

“That’s brilliant now can we actually go?” I asked sitting on top of the suitcases neatly stacked on the trolley. “Is that really necessary Libs?” Caleb groaned slowly pushing the trolley.

“Well yah this is an opportunity for me so why wouldn’t I take it?” I grinned giving him my innocent eyes.

He rolled his eyes and started pushing the trolley. “Whooo yeah” I squealed putting my hands in the air as if it was a roller coaster. Mum and Caleb started laughing. I looked around at the people giving us strange glances.

I smiled and waved at the people, receiving friendly smiles and courteous nods. I giggled English people were quite friendly I suppose. “You’re such a retard Liberty” Caleb said purposely stopping the trolley and starting then stopping and starting.

“Sto-o-o-o-p it” I said continuously when he did that, turning to give him a glare. He stuck his tongue out and ignored my threat.

“I see how it is then” I muttered wandering how I could possibly get revenge on him. It should click eventually.

“We need to go and check out now through immigration and customs” Mum said furrowing her eyebrows. Waiting in this long and winding line that had barrier ropes was just bloody annoying. Why are there so many lines of people everywhere we go?!

“It’s the airport hun” Mum said like she read my mind. Caleb snorted and rubbed his hands together. “It’s getting kinda chilly ain’t it?” Caleb complained tucking his hands in his pocket.

“Yah it is, this place was born with the cold I wonder if it actually gets hot in summer
otherwise I am moving back to Australia” I grumbled rubbing the palms of my hand together.
Mum laughed giving me a kiss on my head and rubbing my shoulder. “It’ll be fine Liberty I just know it will” Mum said staring off into space. Rolling my eyes I leaned against mum for support, Caleb once again returning to his phone.

“This line please” A security office commanded pointing to another line that we had to go through. Okay I don’t want to talk about this.

We made it through they checked our bags and passports once more, scanned and felt us yaddy yadda and now we were outside in the cold and it was 11:37pm and I am buggered.
“We have to get a taxi” Mum exclaimed walking to the edge of the road and looking in different directions before putting her arm out and yelling out taxi.

“Mum thinks this is Australia” Caleb whispered in my ear “But don’t all taxis respond like that?” I whispered back to him raising an eyebrow. He shrugged and pushed the trolley towards the taxi that mum signalled.
