We Go Together

Chapter 9

In the wee hours of the morning, the entire village was awakened by the wail of sirens and red flashing lights. Micky and her dad were wrapped in robes and standing at the front window when an ambulance roared by, blaring.

“I wonder what happened?” mused Micky’s dad.

“Maybe it’ll be on the news?” she suggested.

They flipped on the telly and a new reporter was on the screen, “This just in. The first ambulance has arrived at the scene of the terrible crash in Doncaster. Still no names or victim counts, but stay with us and we’ll have...one moment...Apparently, there were two cars involved, crashed head on. It seems like there were only three people involved. Hold on...yes, three teenaged boys in two different cars. It is believed that the cause of the accident was one of the boys was driving under the influence of alcohol.”

“Terrible,” breathed Micky.

“I wonder if it’s anyone we know?” asked her father.

The reporter started talking again, “Yes. We know the identities of the three victims. Three local Doncaster teens; Max George, Zayn Malik, and Liam Payne. It has yet to be determined their medical state at the moment, but we will have that information as soon as possible.”
Micky was speechless.

“You know either of them?” asked her dad.

“Yes,” she whispered quietly, “All of them. I saw them today.”

“Oh...my,” said her father, pulling her close and holding her tight.

“This just in...” started the reporter, “Tragically; the paramedics at the crash have declared 18 year-old Max George dead on the scene. 17 year-olds Liam Payne and Zayn Malik have been rushed to the hospital and several attempts to revive young George have, unfortunately, failed. The police have determined that the cause of the accident was indeed the drunk driving of Max George. We’ll be back after these messages.”

“Dad!” yelled Micky, “We have to go to the hospital! Do their families know? Come on!”

They ran to the car, robes flapping in the wind, and Micky’s dad attempted to drive safely to the hospital. Micky dashed in when they pulled up to the door.

She anxiously asked the nurse at the front where Liam and Zayn were. “They’re just down the hall, love. Room 112.”

“Thanks,” said Micky, already hurrying down the hall. She walked past some patients and then stopped and took a double take.

Liam was sitting in a chair in the hall. He had several scratches and minor cuts on his face and arms and was holding a bag of ice to a lump on his forehead, but looked pretty good.

“Liam!” she said, sounding worried.

He looked up, wide eyed, “Micky? What are you doing here?”

She collapsed in the chair next to him, “We just saw it one the news. Are you alright?”

“I...I’m fine,” he said, voice cracking.

“What about Zayn?” she asked.

“He’s in the room getting bandaged, but he’s fine too,” said Liam, confused as to why she was here.

“You don’t sound so great,” she commented, “Is your family coming?”

“They’re on the way,” he said, falling quiet and looking down.

“Liam?” she said, touching his arm softly.

“He’s dead,” he said slowly, staring blankly at the opposite wall, “I killed him.”

“No!” she shouted, “No.”

He looked at her, a pained expression masking his face, “Yes I did.”

“It was his fault,” she said, standing up swiftly, “He was drunk. He deserved it!”

“What?” asked Liam, shocked at such a comment, “He deserved to die?”

“Yes!” she said, “He’s done nothing but hurt people, who didn’t need to be hurt. You, me, and plenty of others.”

She sat back down, looking deflated and defeated. Liam awkwardly wrapped an arm around here shoulders, “I’m sorry you feel that way. Do...do you need to talk about it?”

“No,” she said, shrugging his arm off. She stood up, “Well, I’m glad to see that you’re alright. I have to go, my father is waiting.” She turned and walked quickly away. Liam watched her go, completely confused.

The drive home was quiet and when they got home, Micky and her dad went to bed without another word to each other.
