We Go Together

Chapter 1

Micky walked into the bakery, the bell on the door tinkling cheerfully. A curly head looked up, “Can I… Oh, it’s just you.”

“Just me?” she acted wounded.

He laughed, “Mum’s been waiting for you.”

“Goodness, not long?” she asked, worried.

“No,” he reassured her, “She just came in a second ago asking about you.”

“Oh, Micky,” said a voice, headed toward the two teenagers.

“Aunt Anne,” said Micky, “I’m sorry for being late. I had to drop off some books at the library.”

Her aunt laughed, “You and your books? You must have gotten that from your father, because no one in this family likes books like you two.”

She handed Micky a lavender apron, and Micky went into the back room, tying the strings around her waist. She picked up a clear plastic bag with a metal tip, full of hot pink icing. She started to squeeze a swirly, cursive “C” on a sugar cookie, when her apron strings mysteriously came undone and fell to the ground. She turned and there, with a huge grin on his face, stood Louis Tomlinson, Harry’s best friend.

Micky had had a huge, secret crush on him since they had met, almost fifteen years ago.

“Louis!” she exclaimed, “I’m trying to work!”

“Me too,” he said, innocently, his gorgeous blue green eyes twinkling mischievously.

Micky rolled her eyes at him, “Sure.”

He laughed and said, “I’ll retie them if you want, since your hands are full.”

“Please do,” she acted annoyed.

He grabbed the strings and tied them in a messy knot thing, failing miserably at a bow. Her back tingled where his long, graceful fingers brushed her. She was holding her breath when he jabbed her in the side and started tickling her.

She squealed and jumped, “Louis!”

“Who, me?” he asked, standing with his hands behind his back.

Harry walked in, “You’re not working, Lou.”

“I was too,” said Louis, “Mick here just squeaked for no reason at all.”

Harry looked at him, sternly, “Lying about my darling cousin again, Mr. Tomlinson? I should report your misconduct to the boss.”

Micky giggled behind Harry’s back at Louis’ mock look of despair. Then, they all laughed and Harry turned to Micky, “Man the front, will you love? I’ve got to go run an errand with Mum.”

“Of course,” she said, walking up behind the counter and standing behind the cash register, waiting for a customer.

The day was beautiful, sunny, and warm, so the door was propped open, letting in the smell of late summer. People walked on the sidewalks, window shopping, during the last week of summer break. Micky sat in the stool behind the counter, spinning around, when two people walked into the shop. She stopped spinning abruptly and smiled at them.
