Chapter One: Infection? Me? Please.

Few days prior to Blog #5…

Slamming of lockers pierced the afternoon air, Ember was pulling out her Calculus I book and History book. She was placing it into her decorated book bag with lipstick designs all over it. Ember was praising the Lord that school was over. She didn’t know if she could handle another minute in Mr. Blanchard’s class. He has a monotone voice, not making it any easier for Ember to stay awake. Since, she did have a horrible start to the day.

Her alarm clock didn’t go off. She kept on sleeping and sleeping, enjoying it with pleasure. Until, her mother came pounding on the door shrieking, “Ember Jane Rays! You better be out of bed, or God so help me, you will be grounded!”

Didn’t take too long for Ember to make her decision. However, she noticed the time. She slept in for thirty minutes. Therefore, she didn’t get anything to eat for breakfast, didn’t have time to take a shower (put her hair up and put on a lot of deodorant), and grabbed the closest clothes she could. All in all, today was the worst day in high school. Not only did she sleep in, she forgot her homework, earning her a day in detention. Some of the teachers didn’t care about the homework (it can be turned in as late work), but Mr. Blanchard had a field day when she walked up to him, before class started, and told him the situation.

Let’s just say, it didn’t end well.

“So, how was Mr. Blanchard?” a voice came from behind her.

Ember slowly turned around to see her best friend, Sonya.

“I never want to hear his name again.”

Sonya let out a hiss. A notebook was in her grasp. “It went that bad?”

“Let’s just say, I have a little chore to do tomorrow, after school.”

Her bright blue eyes grew enormous. “You have detention?”

“Yep, what a wonderful birthday present, right?” Ember said, closing her locker door with much force.

Sonya placed her hand upon her forehead. “That’s horrible. And it’s your eighteenth birthday for that matter.”

“I know, yippe-do.” Ember was pretending to be happy, throwing her hands in the air.

“What are you going to do?” Sonya asked, with concern.

Ember shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know, I guess I will have to suck it up and get the detention over with. Then, have a fantastic rest of the day.”

“Good point,” Sonya answered. Ember placed her book bag on her back.

“You ready to go?”

“Yes, I am.” Sonya lead the way throw the crowded hallway of people. Some were standing in the middle of the hallway minding their own business.

Ember would catch bits and pieces of their conversation. Whenever she walked by a girl group, the only thing, she noticed, that was on their minds was One Direction. Ember rolled her green-speckled hazel eyes. There was giggling followed right after, she glanced around. It was creepy, the way the girls were laughing all the same … almost high pitched?

“Oh my gosh, they are all talking about One Direction,” piped up Sonya.

“Sonya, we have to get going. We don’t have time to talk about One Direction.”

Sonya frowned at Ember. She had his hands upon her hips. “You are just saying that because you don’t want to hear anything else about One Direction.”

Ember chuckled. Sonya knew her very well.

“Perhaps, but I’m not lying when I say we have to get going. My mom will kill me if the news reaches her ears that I have a detention before I tell her myself.”

Sonya nodded her head. “Yeah, and we don’t want you to die on us, right before the big ONE EIGHT.”

Ember laughed, Sonya did so herself.

“Okay, let’s head out to the car.” Ember and Sonya made their way to Ember’s car. It was a Ford Focus. It was small, but it was nice. Nothing to complain about.

Ember got into the driver’s seat and threw her book bag in the back. Sonya opened one of the side doors placing her book bag right behind the passenger’s seat. Ember was getting situated, while Sonya was pulling out her iPod.

“Since you didn’t let me talk about One Direction. Let’s listen to them!”

“No-"

Sonya had put the cord into her iPod, which was connected to the car for the music to play through the speakers. The first thing that was playing was a guitar. Then, came drums with a voice singing,“You’re insecure. Don’t know what for.”

Ember bit her lip. “Why did you have to put them on?”

Sonya pouted. “I really wanted to listen to them, this is a really good song!”

Before Ember could reply, Sonya turned the music up. Ember could feel the bass pounding against her legs. She faced palmed herself. She knew she couldn’t win against Sonya. Ember put the car into drive with Sonya jamming out to One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful”.

Oh gosh, I hope she doesn’t put on any other One Direction song. Or I will be dead before I get to my house.

***

Ember made it alive. She didn’t know how, but she did. Sonya played two more songs by One Direction; “I Want” and “Gotta Be You”. Luckily, Ember pulled up into her driveway before she could play another song.

“Well, see you later, Sonya.”

“Bye, Ember. I will be up later to see if you are still alive!”

Ember smiled. “Ha-ha. You are so funny.”

Sonya waved at Ember. She was backing out of her driveway, and went to the right, heading to her house. Sonya and Ember have been friends since they were four years old. They have not left each other’s side.

Ember drove up her driveway, parking behind her mother’s car. She got out and headed inside. She didn’t even step inside when her mother was yelling, “Ember! You have some explaining to do!”

Gosh, technology is quick.

Ember took a deep breath in. She walked forward to her mother, who was standing in the kitchen with her hands upon her hips. “Yes, mom?”

“What is this that I have been hearing? You got detention?” she asked, curiously.

An apron was tied around her waist as she stood there.

“Yes, I did. I forgot my homework here when I left this morning,” Ember explained, “I didn’t mean to. It’s just this morning started off wrong and ended wrong.”

Her mother showed no emotion. Ember couldn’t figure out if she was going to ground her or what. She stood there waiting for the verdict.

“Well,” her mother stated, “I guess you are already getting your punishment. You will go to detention and then we will celebrate your birthday.”

Ember was astonished. “Yes, ma’am.”

Her mother turned around to finish what she was baking. Ember couldn’t believe her eyes. Her mom was letting her off with a warning. This is a miracle! Ember hurried up the stairs to her bedroom, which was the first door on the right, and placed down her book bag. The one thing she wanted to do now, she promised herself to do when she got home, was take a shower. It didn’t take long, for she didn’t blow-dry her hair.

Ember went fast to get her Calculus homework done. It didn’t seem like it took forever; however, when she looked at the time as she was finishing the homework, it had taken her almost an hour to complete.

Teachers, fifteen minutes my butt. Liars!

Ember put her Calculus homework, and the folder with her other homework, into her book bag. She grinned to herself as she took out laptop to go on SayWhat.com. She was in love with this website. Ember had only gotten this account two weeks ago and the website was addicting.

She had posted four blogs talking about life, movies, and observations she has made in high school. Ember had gotten some feedback; she was happy – no, thrilled! She loved to see the comments on her blog, and she had about five followers. She felt on top of the world on this website, slowly showing her writing. Ember wanted to become a Journalist or something to do with writing. She thought SayWhat.com would help her get better with writing and editing her own works.

Ember clicked on her favorites, SayWhat.com, and her account popped up. On the top, there was a button that had a number one next to it. Ember had either gotten a new follower or a comment. Ember right mouse clicked the button, and the screen changed. She got another comment on her Blog #4: High School, Enough Said.

Ember scrolled down the screen to find the new comment. It was from ScarlettForever. Her comment was: Yes, I totally agree with you. You have no idea how long I have waited for someone to say that. You are a great writer!

A wonderful warm sensation was what Ember felt. She replied to her, thanking her for commenting and for agreeing with her. Ember knew that the girl would never truly understand how happy she was to have her comment and say such a nice thing.

When, Ember was done with doing that. She couldn’t think of anything else to do. Don’t get her wrong, there was many things she could do on this website. But she just didn’t know what. She figured she should check out some more blogs. Ember clicked on the home button where all the new written blogs pop up.

Ember couldn’t believe her eyes. Most of the stuff she was finding was all about … (you guessed it) One Direction.

Ember was looking through the list. It was unbelievable to see how many girls are talking about One Direction. Unbelievable.

What’s so great about them? I just don’t understand it.

She ran her hand through her dark brown hair looking over the titles of the Blogs. She let out a sigh, and clicked a new tab.

Let’s see why they are getting so much hype.

To Google, she went. Ember clicked on the first link. She began reading the section, it was talking all about One Direction.

Her eyebrow shot up. They are British?

She kept reading and finding more information about this band. It was intriguing, nonetheless. Ember was blown away with how much fame they were getting, and they had only one album. One album!

Ember clicked on another new tab to go to YouTube. She wanted to listen to their voices. Even though Sonya played some songs by them, Ember didn’t really pay attention to them. She typed in One Direction, first search result was “What Makes You Beautiful”, but she saw something underneath it.

The song called “One Thing”. She was curious about it. Ember clicked on it and started listening to the song. It was an acoustic version and in the video you could see all the boys. Ember couldn’t remember which one was which. She listened to the song, and then before she knew it she kept listening to the song over and over again.

In one whole hour, Ember Rays fell in love with One Direction. Especially, the boy with the goofy smile.
