When Worlds Collide

The Carnival

*HARRY'S POV*

We drive the girls to the carnival, and I made sure I sat close next to Sophie. I know Niall didn't want me getting too close to her, but really how could I help myself. She was gorgeous, and what a great sense of humor, too. There was just this thing about being around her... I couldn't help but be happy.

We arrived and right away I could tell this was going to be terribly awkward. Thank goodness we had Louis there, otherwise no one would have talked the whole day.

He started screaming and grabbed Madi's hand (she is very funny, by the way) and grabbed her into the carnival. By the shade of red her face turned, my guess is she's got a little smash on the sass master.

As soon as Louis broke the ice the girls started laughing, and we all eased up. Zayn whispered something in Jamie's ear. I really do hope those two go out... They'd be adorable together. You know who else would be adorable together? Me and Sophie...

I grabbed her hand and started skipping her towards the main entrance of the carnival. "So, what first, m'lady?" I asked her.

She laughed, and looked back at Niall. He was staring at our intertwined hands as if he wanted to cut them off. Someone's a but protective...

"Well anything is fine with me!" Sophie replied sweetly.
"Then how about a ride to start out?" I asked.
"Sounds like fun!" She said. "But, I'll admit I do get scared on big roller coasters..." She said, obviously embarrassed. Her voice wavered.
"Well," I said back, "That's what I'm here for. Consider me your life sized teddy bear. You can squeeze me as tight as you can want when you get scared. I promise I won't mind."

Sophie giggled. "Alright." She said. "Lead the way."
And there we went, skipping through a carnival like grade schoolers. I directed our bodies to the biggest roller coaster I could find. If Sophie's scared, I'm bound to get some mighty fine hugs on this ride!

The line was a breeze. We were on the ride before we knew it. Before it started, Sophie grabbed my hand and looked up at the track. "I need to get out." She said. "Now."
"I'm here, Sophie." I said, trying to calm her down. "It will be fun. I'm here."

She squeezed my hand even tighter, and the car started moving. Before I knew it, we were getting off. I looked at Sophie. Her face was paper white.

"Sophie are you alright?"
"Get me off."

*SOPHIE'S POV*
The last time I went on a roller coaster was with my dad, after he had started drinking. He promised me it would be fun, and if I behaved, I wouldn't get hurt. But I couldn't help it. I screamed at the top of the ride, just before we dropped. It was so much fun! I was just a little girl, how could I help but scream with joy?

My dad didn't want that. "Shut up, little girl." He told me. "You're hurting your dad's ears."

But how could I not have fun on such an amazing machine? I screamed again.

My father would not tell me twice. He did not like to be disobeyed. He hit me.
Pit was the first time I can remember him hitting me when he wasn't completely drunk. He had hurt me because he wanted me to be hurt.

When Harry wanted to ride that ride, I didn't want to seem like a wimp. I told him I was scared, hoping he would change his mind. But, of course, he came up with the perfect way to make it all better. I thought I could do it. I was wrong.

Being on that roller coaster reminded me of my dad. It brought back memories. It brought back pain. Who would have known such an amazing thing, a thing that had once made me so happy, could make me so hurt. When it was over I couldn't move. I don't remember quite what happened, but I know that Harry picked me up in his arms. The last thing I remember before passing out is him telling me it would all be okay. Just as my dad had told me that day, he took me on a roller coaster.

I woke up and heard yelling. The roller coaster. Harry must have told Niall..... Oh no...

"How could you have done this?" Niall yelled.
"I'm sorry!" Harry offered. "I didn't know this would happen!"
"Sophie is fragile, Harry. She's not your average girl. She has been through more than you can imagine."
"Yeah? Like what! What is so secretive that I can't know??" Harry sounded angry.
"You wouldn't get it." Niall snapped back.

"Stop!" I yelled, sitting up. Niall and Harry both lunged to be the first to help me. "I'm fine." I said sternly.
"Niall, Harry was only trying to have fun. He didn't know. And Harry, Niall was only looking out for me. Could you two stop arguing over me? I'm no one's pet, I am my own person. This needs to stop."

They both looked at me blankly.

"Harry," I started. "As a child, I..." Niall interrupted. "Sophie, are you sure you want to... You know..."
"Yes." I said. "I can trust you, right Harry?" I said looking at him.
"Of course." He responded.

"Alright," I started. "As a kid, my parents were alcoholics. I was an only child. They would leave me home at night and go places. I don't know where. They would tell me, 'Sophie we're leaving. Take care of yourself until we're back.' I would make my own dinner and tuck myself into bed, since no one would do it for me. I was six years old." Harry stopped me.

"I'm so sorry, Sophie. I didn't know..."
"I'm not done." I cut in.

"The mornings after they went out, my parents were always hung over and not in the mood to play. If I did one little thing wrong..." I started crying. Niall held me. "Sshh, Sophie. It's okay, I'm here." The tears kept falling, but I had to tell Harry.

"I didn't know what was wrong." I continued. "I didn't even know what alcohol was, how could I have known? If I did one little thing they didn't want... My parents, they would beat me. I... I didn't know why! I was just a little girl! As far as I knew I had dine something wrong and I was just being punished. I thought I was terrible!" I could feel my face just getting wetter and wetter. I sniffled, determined to finish my story. "I hated myself." I said. "If I got beaten for doing something wrong, and was getting hit everyday, I must have been a horrid daughter, right? That's what I thought as a little six year old girl."

Harry looked at me blankly.

I kept going. "My mum and dad, they abused me until I was fourteen years old. By then I had figured it our, but I was too scared to tell any one. Bruises, cuts, scars covered my body. People saw and they did nothing. So, I started hurting myself. I didn't have a reason to live, so why should I right? Niall is the only reason my body isn't in the ground..." At that point, I had completely lost it. I couldn't talk even if I tried. Niall grabbed me and held me tight. I was so happy he was there.

"Sophie, I..." Harry just stared at the ground, kicking the ground with the toe of his shoe. "I am so sorry. Really I am. I had no idea... If there's anything I can do, just, just tell me ok? I really am so sorry. I promise, I would never try to hurt you. Never."

I couldn't stop crying. What a mess. And it all started with just a stupid roller coaster... Why me?

*MADI'S POV*

I was riding a Ferris wheel. With Louis Tomlinson. Like, omg, right? Our hips touched as he told me about his childhood and what it was like growing up. Of course, I already knew about his family and where he grew up, but I remembered the talk I had with Grace earlier and I stayed quiet, playing dumb. It was perfect.

"So, Madi." Louis said to me, looking into my eyes.
"So, Louis," I said back giggling.
"Tell me about you."
"Well my life isn't nearly as fun as yours..." I said.
"We'll it's always nice to make friends." He said back smiling.
oh my gosh his smile....

All of a sudden, as we're hopping of the ride, I see Harry. He looked panicked and scared. In his arms was Sophie, pale as a vampire and as loose as a rag doll. Oh no... Sophie, carnival. How could I not have seen this coming... Oh gosh, Harry... Niall.... This is not going to be good.

*GRACE'S POV*

Niall and I went and played a couple booth games together, but I got thirsty. He left to buy me a water bottle and was gone for a long time. I stood around by the booth until Madi came running with Louis right behind her. She stopped, panting. "Sophie..... Roller coaster... Harry and Niall..." she wheezed. That was all I needed to hear. I ran as fast as I could to where Niall said he would be.

When we got there, Sophie was crying, and Harry was kicking the dirt with his shoe. A blank look was on his face. Niall was holding Sophie, whispering to her softly. No doubt, Sophie had told Harry about her past. This was really going to make things awkward...

I texted Eliza
"Sophie told Harry, she could use you about now."
Soon after she texted back.
"Josh and I will be there soon with a teddy bear to cheer her up. Keep everyone happy, we don't want to make this a day no one will like..."

I didn't know what to do, but I knew Madi would. I forwarded her Eliza's message and soon after she texted back.
"I'm on it..."

She shoved Harry out of her way and pinched Niall's cheeks. "Move over, sweet stuff." She said to him. "It's time for Madi to work her magic."

Sophie looked up at her. She just stared, not making any noises. The tears continued to fall from her face, but she was starting to calm down. I don't know how she does it, but Madi can get someone to cheer up no matter what the situation. It's really actually pretty cool, but it scares me sometimes.

"Sophie, you're beautiful even when you're crying. How do you do it?" She asked.

Sophie blushed. "I'm not beautiful... I probably look like a bum." Sophie said.
Madi wiped a tear from Sophie's face. Madi giggled.
"hehe.... bum..." She said smiling.
Sophie's long face went away, and it was replaced with a smirk. Then she started smiling.
Madi looked Sophie in the eye and said, "Darling, you couldn't be more wrong. Your face looks nothing at all like a bum and you know it."
Sophie stifled a laugh. I don't know what we would have done if Madi wasn't here....
"Well," Sophie started. "You look as perfect as a Disney princess."
"Yeah, you're right." Madi said. "I look like Tiana when she was a frog."
Sophie giggled again. 'No, you're more like..." She stopped for a minute and thought.
"An ugly step sister!!" Madi offered.
I looked around to the others. Eliza and Josh had arrived, Josh carrying the biggest teddy I've ever seen. Louis had a smile on his face, Niall looked mesmerized. Harry was still kicking the dirt.
Madi took the teddy bear from Eliza. "You, Sophia Horan, are my Cinderella, and I offer you this stuffed mammal as a token of my love. Do you accept it?" She pulled a puppy dog face.
Sophie laughed and said, "Why yes, my prince, I do."
And with that, the two fairy tale characters skipped off to play a booth game. Niall looked amazed.
"I've known Sophie my whole life. I have never been able to calm her down that fast...." He said quietly.
I laughed. He looked up at me. "Sorry, I kind of zoned out for a minute there." "That's alright." I said.
"What would you like to do now?" He asked me.
"Well, I've always wanted to try one of those dunk booths... Do you think they'd have one here?"
"If they don't I will personally drive you to a place that does." He handed me a cold water bottle. "Now let's go have some fun."

*LIAM'S POV*
I was riding a roller coaster with Nicole, Greta, Zayn and Jamie. It was really a lot of fun. I sat in between Greta and Nicole, and Jamie and Zayn sat by each other.

It was really quite a let down that Greta had a boyfriend. She was so sweet and had such a great personality. I liked Nicole, too, but... She was a bit wild. I still had a lot of fun with her though. Jamie and Zayn didn't really talk to anyone but each other, which was kind of cute. I was happy that they were fond of each other. While everyone screamed around me, I tried to put together the couples in my head.
There was Eliza and Josh (of course) Grace and Niall, and Jamie and Zayn. Harry and Sophie seemed to fancy each other as well. Those were the obvious couples. Then there was Madi. She seemed to like Louis a lot, but it looked to me like he was fancying Nicole. I liked Nicole a lot, but I don't think it would work out between us.
We hopped off the ride, and Nicole grabbed my hand and pulled me towards another attraction. I got the butterflies and I felt my face burn red. It was as I was on a whole other roller coaster...

*LOUIS' POV*
The way Madi handled the situation with Sophie was awesome. Suddenly she started talking and BAM Sophie was fine! It was crazy. I think Madi would make an awesome friend. Harry pulled me aside after she and Sophie left.
"Mate, you should totally go for her." He said.
"She's just a friend," I said back. "Madi isn't really my type..."
"Well, she really likes you." Harry told me.
"How can you tell?"
"When she looks at you. It's obvious!"
"Well, the thing is... I kind of had my eye on Nicole." I said.
"Oh," Harry said sadly. "Well, it's your choice."

*ZAYN'S POV*
Jamie..... She's something else...

*JAMIE'S POV*
Oh, Zayn, he is.... Yeah he's pretty perfect.

*ELIZA'S POV*
Honestly, I was just happy we got the Sophie thing over with... It was almost dinner time once we all met up again, so we decided we'd play one last game. It was girls against boys, and the losers had to pay for dinner.
We played a racing game, where you have to shoot the target as many times as you can on the right spot. The more accurately you hit, the faster your car moves! It was a lot of fun. The boys ended up losing (Personally I think they might have tried to let us win,) and we left the carnival to go to dinner.
I'm glad I have such wonderful friends... I don't know where I would be without them.
