Healing the Heart

Chapter Nine: Everything Comes Crumbling Down, Part One

  • Dylan’s POV

I walk up to the abandoned warehouse. It was about 12 at night and pitch black outside. I had been out in the dark long enough for my eyes to adjust to the light. I had gone home to change into some jeans, a grey knitted sweater, and some black high heeled boots. Hey, they make me do this stuff way too often so I can dress however the hell I want as long as I get it done.
I walk up to the door of the warehouse. The lights were off and it seemed quiet. “Great,” I mumble and open the door. I could see and empty floor, with trash on it here and there but I couldn’t make out any of it. I took a step in and almost fell down. The floor was wet, they must have cleaned it with water or something.

I saw stairs nearby and started to go up them when I stopped, I smelled iron, and lots of it. Well, it did say that this use to be a metal factory. With someone washing the floor and the trash, someone might have been here cutting and making metals, like iron.

I shrug and keep going, eventually getting to the top. I was now on a balcony ten feet above ground level. About half of the room was covered in shadows but I could still make out a door near the safety bars that went around the edge of the balcony. If I could have, I would frown even more, this is too easy. I don’t like it.

I reach for the door and wiggle the handle. Locked. I sigh and mumble, “Really? Well at least I get to have some fun before my actual ‘job’ starts.”

I balance on one leg and kick the door off its hinges with one try. When I set my leg down I hear shuffling behind me. I quickly turn around and throw my arm out, hearing the satisfying grunt of pain from my attacker. I grab their arms and hold them with one hand behind their back before slamming their face into the top safety bar with my other hand.

I lean down and whisper into my attacker’s ear, “You know, it’s not nice to attack your visitors.”

He laughed, “Ah, Dylan I haven’t seen you since-“

I bring his face up by grabbing his hair and slam it down again. “Enough talk, let’s go.”

I started to half drag half push him down the stairs. When we get to the bottom I kick open the door and right when I was about to step out he laughs.

“Wait a minute,” He said, “I have a surprise for you.”

I hear the click of a button and the lights are on. I look around and my eyes widen in shock. Blood was all over the warehouse. Fresh blood. Mangled body parts lay everywhere. The weapons that inflicted the injuries lay around randomly. So much blood.

I saw a bloodied chainsaw on a table with a use to be woman strapped there in barbed wire. Now it was just a body shredded and cut into pieces. On the balcony I saw a flamethrower hanging halfway off the top step and a body in a chair, burnt to a crisp. Another body hung from the balcony that looked like her had broken every bone in it at least once and four times at most. There was a lot more, and now that I had seen it, I would never forget it.

I let out a blood curdling scream and stumble out of warehouse, somehow bringing him with me. I trip over a rock and fall to the ground, letting go of my target. I was covered in blood, I could smell it, taste it, feel it, I was even breathing it. It got harder and harder to breath as I looked up and saw my target laughing at me as the door to the warehouse closed.

He took out a gun and pointed it at me, “Did you like it? I certainly enjoyed setting it up! I haven’t had that much fun since the night of you seventeenth birthday, do you remember that?”

I finally saw what he looked like and couldn’t breathe. It was him! Flashes of that night came back to me. The burning house on the hill. The 14 unrecognizable bodies on the blood soaked lawn with signs of their use to be owners. The screams of my family. All of the blood.

I tried to breath but I couldn’t get any air. Why wouldn’t the air come? All I could hear was hear was his laugh, it echoed around me, becoming louder and louder until my head felt like it was going to explode. I head a gun shots. One, my stomach felt like it was burning. Two, I felt my right lung start to fill with blood. I was picked up and thrown back onto the ground, my forehead exploded in pain as I landed on my stomach. Three, I felt my left shoulder blade shatter.

I somehow felt the barrel of the gun on the back of my head. Four. Silence, that’s what’s supposed to come next, right? It didn’t. His voice faded around me and for the first time I noticed the sirens. I heard three more gin shots and then I felt someone turn me over, lying me on my back with my head in their lap.

Everything was blurry, and things left a streak of color when they moved. I could barely Chief floating a little bit above me. “Are you okay, kid!?”

His voice echoed. Everything felt so far away. It was like my conscience was at one side of a tunnel and my body and its surroundings were at the other side. Everything felt and sounded and looked far away. I could see police officers run around us.
“Chief?” I ask, my own voice echoing too.

“You’re going to be okay, kid. Got it? We caught him, you did a good job, okay.” Was he crying?

“He, he killed my family. He w-was the one that took me a-and Evan. The one who made us disappear for two years, the one who killed him.” I mumble.

Chief nodded, “Yeah he is. You caught him Dylan. He won’t hurt anyone anymore.”

“That’s not true.” I gasp out, my vision starting to go black around the edges, “He killed more people. Don’t go into the warehouse. Don’t go in!”

    I gasp as he says, “I won’t, I won’t.”

My lungs burned for air, I coughed up some blood. I felt people lift my up and put me on a stretcher. Chief held my hand as they wheeled me towards the ambulance.

    “Promise,” I ask.

“Promise” he mumbles and let’s go of my hand. As they tilt me up to go into the ambulance I see the girls, my friends, crying, and holding onto the guys. Liam, the only guy without a girl to hold stepped towards me and tried to grab my now free hand. Then everything went black.
