Finding Myself.
Boston.
Waking up, I could hear the chirps of the birds outside. I have forgotten to close my window last night, so my room was filled with a cool, sweet smelling morning breeze. Outside, the Sun was shining and it looked like a beautiful day. I smiled to myself, stretched and got out of bed. I shuffled over to my wardrobe and picked out something to wear. I chose my floral, knee length, summer dress, as it was a beautiful day outside. I wandered down to the bathroom to fix my bed-hair. After I’d braided my hair, I trudged down the stairs. I could smell something delicious coming from the kitchen.
“Morning!” Clara smiled as I entered.
“Morning Clara!” I replied.
She was already dressed and ready for the day as well. She wore a tight, pale pink top with lace hanging down for the neckline over the chest area. She wore light denim short, knee length. She had he black lacy flats on her feet as well.
“Where’s Niall?” I asked, sitting down at the table.
“He had to go out with the boys.” She said as she flipped the egg in the pan on the stove.
I nodded happily, acknowledging the egg.
Just at that moment, there was a knock at the door.
“COMING!” Clara yelled cheerfully as she walked to the foyer.
From the kitchen, I could hear Clara opening the door. I could hear a man’s voice, speaking softly, and I could hear Clara agreeing to everything he’d say with a “mhm.”
After a few moments, both entered the kitchen.
“Destiny, this is Boston. He’s from the government association where I work. He’s here to check up on you.”
At that, Boston sat down.
“So, Destiny, how are you liking it here? Has anyone talked to you that look suspicious? Has anyone asked you about your past? Do you feel safe?”
I thought about all the questions for a second, than replied cheekily. “It’s great, no, no, yes.”
Boston smiled. “Well, that’s great.”
I nodded once, smiling.
“Destiny, have you had any sad thoughts lately?” He asked.
I looked up at Clara, who nodded encouragingly.
“Well, When I DO think about my parents, I get upset… But I guess that’s natural, right?” I looked back at Clara again.
“Of course.” Boston answered. “But, Clara and I think it would be a good idea if you spoke to someone about these feelings. Like maybe a counsellor.” He continued.
This time, I looked up at Clara questioningly.
She closed her eyes and tilted her head down, shaking it.
“But, Why?! I don’t need too, I don’t want too! That’s stupid!” I started to raise my voice. “I’m perfectly fine! Yes, my parents are dead, but that doesn’t mean I’m like, permanently depressed or physiologically scared!”
Boston and Clara looked at each other.
“Please Destiny. Can you do it for Niall and I? We just want some security, and for you to be happy.” Clara smiled gently at me.
The worrying look in her eyes made the guilt rack over me. “Alright.” I said, putting my head down.
Clara hurried over to me, hugging me from behind and kissing my forehead. “Thank you darling, thank you.”
Sitting on the bus, on my way to school, my bag taking the spot next to mine on the seat, I watched the houses go by. We finally came to a halt, but we weren’t at school. We were at Lacy’s stop. As soon as she got on, she looked straight at me, and smiled the biggest smile I’ve ever seen on someone.
“Destiny! Where’d you get off to yesterday? I saw you with that dweeb Addison.” She laughed to herself and sat down in the seat in front of me.
Did this girl just call MY friend a dweeb? I decided to stick up for Addison.
“She’s not a dweeb.” I looked at her, emotionless.
She laughed. “Yes, she is! And she hangs out with that gothic… thing…”
“Excuse me?!” I said before I could have thought about it.
“What?” She said, the attitude obvious in her voice.
“Ok. I don’t know if anyone has told you off for being so rude, but they should. Don’t talk about my friends like that. Carmen likes the colour black, that doesn’t make her gothic. And she is not a ‘thing’. And Addison is smart, not a dweeb. Talk about my friends like that, and you’ll get what’s coming for you. Now, if you’ll excuse me.” I said matter-of-factly, and got up out of my seat, and sat down the front. I didn’t dare look back at Lacy. I stared ahead the whole way to school.
I stood at the front gate, alone. I was waiting for Carmen, or Addison, or Amberley or Alexis. Finally, I saw Addison heading my way. She had a great big smile on her face.
“You my friend.. are amazing.” She said as she hugged me tightly.
I hugged her back, and when we pulled out of the hug, I gave her a confusing look. “What?”
“Aaron told me.” Her smile was wide.
“Aaron?” I smiled at her smile. She was one of those girls whose smiles were contagious.
“He catches you bus.” She told me.
My heart skipped a beat and I looked to the ground. Had he told Addison that I had a go at Lacy?
I looked back up at Addison, who was smiling like crazy. She looked like she was about to burst!
Yep. Just at that thought, Addison let out a shriek. “I love you! You’re the best, best friend ever!” She hugged me again.
I couldn’t help it. I hugged her tightly and smiled. “You’re very welcome.” I told her.
“Morning!” Clara smiled as I entered.
