Finding Myself.
the first day at school is always tough.
The school wasn’t that bad. It was just like an ordinary school. As I walked down the main path, next to the girl whose name I didn’t know, I notice I was the only one who didn’t, and I soon figured out her name.
“Hi Lacy!” One girl said and waved. Lacy smiled back.Hey Lacy!” A guy called out. Lacy winked and waved. I even heard one girl whisper to her friend “Lacy looks so pretty today!” So, this girl, Lacy seemed pretty popular.
As we walked into the hallways, two more girls ran up to Lacy.
“Oh em gee Lace. Kieran called me on the weekend!”
“Oh girl, he so wants you.” Lacy laughed back. The other girl nodded and laughed.
“Who’s this?” The other one said.
“Um, this is…” She looked at me. “What’s your name?”
“Destiny.” I replied.
“This is Destiny! She’s Niall’s sister!” she looked at her other friends excitedly.
“Oh em gee, no way. I’m Cassie.” One of them said. Her black hair was purposely curled, and she had blue eyes. I smiled at her.
“And I’m Liberty! So great to meet you! She winked at me. I smiled back again.
I don’t know about these girls. They seem popular, but they don’t seem snobby. They say ‘oh em gee’ instead of ‘oh my god’ which is pretty fucking annoying and stupid, but I don’t have any other friends at the moment…
Liberty, Cassie and Lacy hooked arms and started to walk down the hall. I stood there like a complete loser, not knowing whether to go with them or stay.
“Well, are you coming or what Destiny?” Liberty smiled at me.
“Oh, yeah, sorry.” I replied.
Liberty put her arm out for me to hook mine through. It felt weird, but I did.Halfway down the hallway, I started to feel extremely awkward. Liberty, Cassie and Lacy chatted away about some guy called Kieran and some other guy called Derek, and I walked next to them, my arm was squashed tightly and quite uncomfortably through Liberty’s. Just as I was about to attempt to pull my arm free and run home, Liberty’s arm slipped away from mine. Cassie and Lacy unhooked arms too. We stopped outside a classroom for a moment, and then walked in.
“Ladies. You’re early… for once.” A tall man stood at the front of the empty classroom.
“Yeah hey sir. This is Destiny, she’s new.” Cassie smiled.
“Hi Destiny.” The teacher smiled.
“She’s in our class, right sir?” Lacy asked.
The tall man walked over to his desk and opened up a book. He read through it for a second, then looked up. “She certainly is.” He smiled at me. “Nice to meet you, I’m Mr Palm, you’re biology, science and chemistry teacher.” He smiled at me.
“Nice to meet you.” I smiled back.
At that moment, the bell rang. Immediately, teenage boys and girls started flowing into the room.
“Take your seats everyone!” Mr Palm said loudly.
Everyone obeyed. It looked like everyone sat in special areas. Cassie, Liberty and Lacy took the three seats up the back. I followed them until I realised that there was in fact, only three seats.
“Oh no! Are you serious? That sucks. Sorry Destiny!” Lacy said when she realised I had been left behind with no seat.
There were a few seats at the front and two in the middle, of to the side. I decided to take the one in the middle, next to the window. I sat down in my chair as did a few other late or slow teenagers. I looked to my side. A girl with blonde hair sat there. She turned to me and smiled.
“So, today, we’ll be studying the periodic table, its elements and how they work.” Mr Palm said, then turned to the whiteboard and started to scribble down words. As I started to take down the notes in a spare book I’d found in the bag Clara had packed, a tiny piece of scrunched up paper landed on my desk. I looked around, and the blonde haired girl next to me gestured towards the paper with a little nod. I opened it up.
You’re friends with Lacy? It read.
I decided I’d write back.
I don’t know really. She caught my bus this morning and started talking to me unexpectedly. I wrote and threw it back. I knew passing notes was childish, but it couldn’t hurt, right?
The paper landed on my desk yet again, before I could pick up my pen and start writing again.
I don’t mean to sound rude or nosy. But don’t go there. She ruins lives. She’ll chew you up and spit you out. And by the looks of you, you don’t deserve that. It read.
I looked back at Lacy. She was biting her lip, and eyeing off an attractive boy in the row in front of her. He was looking back intensely. Yeah. She looks like one of those types. Thanks for warning me. I guess she was my only friend. I’m new. Throw it back.
Don’t worry! You can sit with me at lunch. :) It said. I looked at her. She smiled at me and I couldn’t help smiling back.
