Finding Myself.
awkward bus trips.
After sitting through an awkward dinner with Niall and Clara, having an overly long shower, and crawling into bed, I finally got a chance to think everything through. In one day, I had moved to a new town and into a new house, met my new guardian Clara, found out I had a brother I never knew I had, met four rather interesting boys and lost my whole state of mind. One thing was still missing and I knew what it was. My mum and dad have been dead for 2 weeks now and it’s all my fault. It was killing me, not knowing who did it, and not knowing why that person had wanted to kill me, but I just had to deal with it. I peered through the darkness, the only light flowing through my window. I could see the outline of the frame that held the one precious photo I got to keep of me and my parents. I flopped back down, my head hitting the pillow harder than I expected, and rolled over.
I looked out the window, both my eyelids trying to slip over my eyes. I didn’t let them. I wanted to stay awake. After feeling the breeze on my face for a little longer, watching my curtains slowly waving in the cool air that flowed into my room, I gave in. My eyelids dropped over my eyes and I fell into, what some would classify as, sleep.
I woke up in the morning to the sound of my big brother’s laughter. It wasn’t the worst way to be woken, but I didn’t want to be woken at all. Today was my first day at school, much to my disappointment. I got out of my bed, which seemed way more appealing than it should, and headed downstairs. I had only known my brother and Clara for a day now, but I didn’t care what I looked like. I trudged down the stairs loudly and made a bee-line for the kitchen. After only picking at my dinner last night, my stomach grumbled with hunger. I walked into the kitchen and greeted Clara and Niall with a half-hearted smile.
“Morning sunshine!” Clara smiled.
“Hey there.” I grinned. Clara was so kind and I was really starting to like her.
“What’s up little sis?” Niall grimaced as he saw the state of his little sister. “you look… ravishing this morning.”
“Don’t I?!” I laughed. I always thought in my mind that I was a morning person, but my body didn’t agree.
“Hungry?” Clara asked.
I nodded fiercely and sat down at the table. After only sitting for a few moments, Clara bought over a stack of blueberry pancakes. My eyes widened at the sight of them.
“Oh my goodness!” I breathed.
Clara smiled and gestured towards the stack. “You better eat up buddy! Your bus gets here in…” She checked the silver watch that sat on her wrist loosely. “twenty minutes.”
“Twenty minutes?! Oh no!” I said as I started to scoff down my pancakes. It normally takes me half an hour to do my hair only! How am I going to get completely ready, for my very first day at school, in only twenty minutes?!
After finishing four pancakes off the stack of eight and giving the rest to Niall, I ran upstairs. I scrambled through my closet. What the hell do I wear? I ended up picking my long, tight jeans with a rusty-red throw-over jumper. I ran to the bathroom, which I had only been in once before, which was the middle of last night to pee. I looked around the bathroom, and grabbed the straightener that was sitting on the counter. I didn’t know whose it was, but I used it anyway. I pulled half of my hair from the top of my head back into a pig-tail. The rest I left to lay loose over my shoulders. I straightened it out, and put a bow on my pig-tail. This’ll have to do. I quickly brushed my teeth and ran to my room to put my little black flats on. When I had my shoes on, I glanced at the photo of my parents and I. I blew it a little kiss and ran downstairs.
Clara handed me a light blue back-pack. “This has everything you’ll need for today.”
“Thanks Clara. But, one question. Wasn’t Harry going to take me to school today?” I looked at Niall who had already finished the pancakes and was putting the dish in the sink.
“Yes. I’m sorry about the late notice, we thought he was going to take you to school as well, but something came up and he couldn’t, so you’ll have to get the bus, just for today.” Clara gave me a pitiful smile, and I smiled back, trying to look as cheerfully as possible.
“Ok. No worries, thanks for everything this morning guys, I’ll see you this afternoon!”
And with that, I ran out the door.
The bus arrived as soon as I got down to the bottom of the driveway. The door opened and I smiled at the bus driver as I got on. I looked around at all the seats. There weren’t many people on the bus, so I took a seat seven rows from the front, next to the window. After a few stops and a few other people getting on, we stopped at out the front of a large house. The doors opened and a girl with dark brown hair got on. There were about twenty-five spare seats around me, but you’ll never guess where she sat. That’s right, next to me.
“I haven’t seen you around before!” She smiled at me as she sat down.
“I moved here yesterday.” I replied a bit too bluntly.
“Really? Awesome! But why would you want to move to a place as small as Fulton?” She asked, still smiling.
Great, one the very first day, the secret about my parents being murdered and me having to move to a foreign town under government protection was going to come out, and I’d be one of those social rejects with no friends and m life would be more over than it already it is.
“I’ve come to live with my brother.”
“No way! That’s pretty cool. What’s your brother’s name?” She asked me, smiling. I don’t even know you, lay off would you?
“Niall.” I smiled.
“Wait. Did you say Niall? There is only one Niall in this town. He’s like, thee Niall. Are you saying you’re related to thee Niall?” She stared at me.
“Um. Yes…” I looked at her.
“Ok. You may not know this, or you may, but I’m going to tell you anyway because I LOVE this story.” She smiled at me. My response was a slight nod of my head and she took that as her queue to start. “Niall is like famous in this town. He and his four mates, Liam, Zayn, Harry and Louis are just oh em gee perfection.”
“Why?” Was all I managed to mutter.
“Uh, because they’re fabulous! Everyone likes them because their utterly gorgeous!” She giggled. “I took a picture of Louis why he wasn’t watching once.” She giggled again.
This girl seems like bad news.
At that thought, the bus halted. I looked out the window and read the sign that sat directly in front of me. “Fulton High. Aim To Endeavour.”
“Come on!” The girl smiled and headed to the exit of the bus. I didn’t want to get off, but I did.
