Finding Myself.

back to school.

When we get home, I run upstairs as soon as we’re through the door, jump in for a 2 minute shower, braid my hair then climb straight into bed.
I know that Clara, Niall, Louis and Zayn are downstairs, so that must mean Liam and Harry are together, or in their rooms.

I stare up at my ceiling, thinking about the ridiculous night that had just finished.
How do I know I can trust Jake?
Will he tell my secret?
Is it weird that I cried on his shoulder, hugged him tight and over all spent my whole day with a stranger?
I tell myself to stop thinking negatively, which is what I do best. I shut my eyes and try to think of the positives.
I trust Jake.
He’s been through the exact same thing!
And what’s wrong with making a new friend and spending lots of time with them?
Especially if we have lots in common, and get along well.
And that’s the last thought I remember thinking before drifting off into a heavy sleep.

Clara wakes me up in the morning in the worst possible way.
“Rise and shine, time for school!”
I groan and roll over, opening my eyes, stretching.
Today was the day Harry was meant to come to school with me…
Doesn’t look like THAT’S gonna happen.
“Come on Dest! Your bus gets here in 15 minutes!”
I jolt up.
Shit.
I race to the bathroom, pulling on my black jeans that roll up to the middle of my shins, a light grey shirt with a tiger’s face on it and a denim through-over jacket.
I pull my braid out, brush my hair, than re-braid it.
I tell myself I’ll take a larger lunch to school, so I brush my teeth without breakfast.
I sprint back to my room, grab my black Vans and hop down the stairs, trying to shove my foot into my shoes.
I get to the bottom and sigh a thankful breath when I see Clara holding my bag full of my books and lunch.
“And yes, it’s an extra big lunch for an extra non-existent breakfast.”
I look at her ever so thankfully and turn to rush out the door. But before I do, Clara’s voice stops me dead in my tracks.
“Don’t forget, Boston is picking you up this afternoon. You have counselling.”
But I act like I don’t hear, and ran to the door. Just before I close it, I turn and yell to the whole house.
“BYE!”
I rush down the driveway, past the palm trees and the bits of shiny broken camera still sitting under them.
I reach the bus stop just in time and climb aboard, taking my usual seat.

I sit through a gruelling first 2 periods, recess, then maths and German class. I will the clock to go faster, to tick all the way until lunch. Until I can see Jake again. And finally… It does.
I walk out of the classroom, making mindless chatter with Alexis.
I search the clustered hall, looking for the familiar, kind eyes of Jake.
“Destiny?” I hear my voice.
I turn, but it’s only Alexis.
“Yeah?” I ask, smiling softly at her sweet face.
“I said, do you think Kieran is with Lacy?”
I pretend I’m interested in my friend’s gossip.
“Oh, for sure. I mean, have you seen them?”
Alexis laughs at my tone.
We walk for a bit until we reach the front green and sit under our group’s trademark tree. Amberley, Carmen and Addison are all sitting there. Carmen buried in a book, Amberley staring at the open math’s book in her lap, and Addison peeking over her shoulder, pointing out equations and formulas.
Alexis and I sit and I immediately take out my lunch. Clara was right, it was massive… And I couldn’t wait to gobble it all up. Just as I put the burger to my mouth, a solid figure plonks down next to me.
“Hey fancy pants.” Jake smiles at me.
My heart beats fast, but is relieved at the same time to see his familiar face, to look into his trusting eyes.
“Let me eat, boy!” I laughed, and shove the burger in my mouth.
After I finished, I turned to him. “Hi.”
He laughs, and for the rest of lunch, that’s all we do.
When the bell goes, I get up and whisper to Jake.
“I have um… counselling this afternoon. What do I do?”
Jake puts his arm around me and we walk towards the opening of the school, towards the hall that holds all our lifeless classrooms.
I turn and wave to the girls, and they all wink and giggle back. I roll my eyes at them, but smile anyway.
“Just act cool. Remember fancy pants, the counsellor is there to help you. And they’re fixed to a strict law of confidentiality. So whatever you say to them, will never be repeated to anyone else. Trust me.”
I thank him, smile at him, and then walk into my classroom. I turn to wave at him but he’s already gone.
The last two periods go by faster than I wanted them too. I was truly nervous for counselling, but I just kept repeating Jake’s statement in my head.

I walk out of the hall at the end of school, and instantly see Boston standing by the school board.
I walk up to him and get a shock when he smiles warmly at me.
“Ready to go?” He asks.
“Sure am.” I reply.
