Finding Myself.
In the pool.
Arriving at my house, I glanced at Jake. He had a smile on his face.
I barely know this guy…
But, we walked inside anyway.
Clara greeted us at the door. She was watering the indoor plant that sat next to the front door.
“Oh.” She gasped, surprised.
“Hi Clara.” I blushed.
“Who’s your friend?!” I heard someone behind Clara. Louis popped out. “This is cute.” He looked at me, than raised his eyebrows suggestively as he walked towards me. He put his hand out to Jake. “Yo, I’m Louis.”
Jake sheepishly shook his hand. “Jake.”
I shoved past Louis as he grinned at me. “You’re an idiot. Clara, this is Jake from school. It’s really hot, so we’re gonna go for a swim.” I stopped, than glared at Louis. “Don’t disturb us.”
I lead Jake to the pool area. “I’ll be back, I’m just gonna get into my togs.” I said. He nodded as I left the room.
Walking up the stairs, I started getting regretful thoughts.
This is a big mistake!
I don’t even know this guy!
What the hell am I doing?!
Then, I got a change of mind.
But… Jake was a nice guy, and cute too.
I guess its ok… Just a friendly swim, to get to know each other.
It’s not like we like each other.
I reached my room, and searched for my swimmers. I finally found a bikini; it was a boob-tube type top. It was black with a big white bow in the middle. The bottoms were baby pink, and at the back they had a big black bow as well.
Good enough… I thought as I threw it on.
I walked down the stairs cautiously. When I got to the bottom of the stairs, I glanced down the hall. No-one was coming, thank God. I quickly ran across the foyer and into the pool area, closing the door behind me.
Jake was sitting on the side of the pool, dangling his feet in the water. He’d taken his shirt off and his jeans were rolled up to his shins. He turned as he heard the door.
“Hey, you were taking a lo-“ He stopped when he saw me, looking me up and down. I stood there in my bikini, looking back at him.
“Pardon?” I asked him.
“Uh, you--I just --you look… nice.” He splurged.
I smiled at him. “Thanks!”
For some reason, my nerves had subsided and had been replaced with excitement.
“It’s boiling, let’s get it!” I laughed as I ran up behind him and jumped into the pool. He laughed and followed me in.
A realised, talking with Jake made everything easier. He was so easy to get along with, had such a good sense of humour, and could make me laugh no matter what he said. It wasn’t like there was anything romantic between us… We were sort of… slowly… But comfortably, becoming best friends.
After swimming around a bit more with Jake, splashing each other and telling each other more about ourselves, there was a knock at the pool area door.
I was floating on my back, smiling at what Jake had just said, when Harry burst in. He was shirtless, in his boardies, looking like he was ready to come in the pool.
“I thought I heard your laugh you little cut-“ He stopped when he saw Jake come up from under the water. “Oh. I didn’t know you had company Destiny…”
“Oh. Harry. This is Jake. He’s a friend from school.” I told him, standing up in the pool.
Jake waved happily. “Hello!”
He was down the other end of the pool, and had been floating on his back too.
“Um… Hi.” Harry looked confused.
“What?” I asked him.
“Um, I thought—I just thought that—you and I—We were—“ He spluttered.
“Harry. You and I were what?” I asked, a bit annoyed. I looked over at Jake, who was looking down into the water, not really paying attention.
“A thing. I thought we were a thing. We get along well. But…” He stopped and looked down.
“Harry! Jake is my friend! That’s all!” I shrieked, realising what Harry was implying. “And why would you like me? You have a girlfriend! And she was here just this morning! You really think you can fool me like that? I’m not stupid Styles, I-“ Harry cut me off.
“My girlfriend?!” He laughed ironically. “You thought that was my girlfriend?! That was my sister Destiny!” He said bluntly. “I thought you knew!” He looked down at the ground.
I didn’t know what to say. How could I be so foolish? I knew Harry liked me, why did I have to think that his sister was his girlfriend? Now, I’d ruined everything.
“Harry… I’m sorry. I didn’t know…” I wasn’t brave enough to look him in the eyes.
“Maybe you should ask before you go assuming things. Because that.” He paused. “Can really hurt someone.”
I could feel him looking at me, and I couldn’t bare his upset gaze. So, I remained looking at the rippling water on the surface of the pool.
Harry gave a puff out of his nose, like a laugh. I could see him shake his head full of curls slightly before turning around and leaving the pool area, shutting the door harder than needed behind him.
I looked over at Jake who gave me a sympathetic smile. “Well, you’ve got me…?” He smiled.
I gave a small, too-brief-too-be-real laugh and swam over to him, frowning.
“Good, because I’m pretty sure I’ve ruined everything with him now.”
