Finding Myself.
unexpected news.
A strong aroma filled the room as I walked down the stairs. I had no idea what room to go to, I didn’t even know what town I was in, whose house I was in, let alone what room I should be in when someone tells me what the hell is going on.
The thought of my parents popped into my head again, as it did every time I was alone. I tried to occupy my mind; I needed a distraction before I lost it again. I looked around. The hallway looked promising; it hopefully contained the room in which I was needed, so I walked down it.
I walked past the first room, and after a few steps passed the doorway, I heard a voice.
“Destiny, is that you?” I heard Clara’s voice.
I took 3 steps back, and was at the door. “It’s me.” I forced a smile.
It worked, because Clara smiled back. “Come in.” She said happily.
I took a seat at the wooden table in the middle of the room. The kitchen was adorable I had to admit. It had a window, looking out over a vegetable patch, and the kitchen bench covered in little pots of rosemary and herbs. Jars of water and a vase of bright flowers sat nearby. On the other side, it had a stove, an enclosed pizza oven, a long counter and a fridge. Above the counter, were a few cabinets, which obviously held the food.
“There are probably many things you don’t understand at the moment Destiny.” Clara said, as she sat down across from me at the table. “As you know, you’re under government protection and must be as far away from the location in which your parents were… “She paused for a second, “killed.” There was a short silence, but she quickly continued “This is the place you’ll be staying. As you know, I’m Clara. I work for the government in which are protecting you. They thought I would be suitable to host you, because apparently, we look like sisters. But, there’s something you should know.” Clara finished.
I took a second to take it all in, and then said “what’s that?”
“You have a brother.”
The words shocked me. How could my parents not tell me? In all my 16 years of life, I’d always wanted a sibling. Always thinking I was an only child, my whole life.
“Oh. How old is he?” Was all I could manage to stutter.
“He’s 18.” She said calmly.
I didn’t really know what to say, or to think. “Where… Where is he?” I stammered.
“Niall!” She suddenly yelled gently. The door swung open. In walked a tall, blonde haired boy. He was skinny, and sweetly pale.
”hey sis.” He smiled.
I didn’t really know what to say to my long lost brother. He stood in front of me, hands in pockets, looking at me. “I know it’s hard Destiny, but mum and dad were going to tell you. I swear it. They just didn’t know when.” He told me, looking into my eyes. “Clara is my girlfriend you see, and I’ve been living with her for quite a long time. Mum and Dad put me up for adoption when I was born. I never knew why, and I guess I’ll never be able to now, but that’s ok.” He had blue eyes, perfectly rounded and sweet looking.
“Ok.” I said simply. There was too much going on; I didn’t think I could handle much more. “Look, I’m going to take some air and clear my head.” I tried to smile, and nodded to show my farewell.
I left the kitchen, and walked into the main room, where the stairs come down to the ground floor. I took a moment to look around; noticing how far up the roof was, noticing that you could watch the stairs twirl towards the ceiling from where I stood. I noticed the floor. It was that old-fashioned black and white checker, like on a chess game, or like in those old fashioned 80’s diners. The floor took this pattern to the hallway, and then the hallway started up a shaggy carpet. I stopped day-dreaming yet again, and headed for the front door.
Outside, I took in a deep breath. The air in Fulton smelt of rain and a faint smell of the nice, natural wood-fire aroma. The air was sweet and thin, unlike in my old town. I looked down the driveway. It looked much more appealing than it should, probably because I honestly just wanted to get away from this house. I walked down in, taking in the palms on the side. When I reached the bottom, I sat down. The concrete of the driveway was cool on my bottom. I stared out in front of me. There was a middle-sized fence, made out of wood across the road. It was pale brown. I looked past the small fence. A field laid itself across the Earth. The grass on the field was the loveliest colour of green, and its perimeter was lined by thin trees, whose branches were covered in the yellow-orange leaves I’d seen on the way into Fulton. Passed the field, mountains flowed in uneven curves through the skyline.
It was peaceful and picturesque, and I like it a lot.
