Running

Chapter 1

To be waken in the middle of the night is never pleasant. Waken by a man you don't know. That's just scary. Now lets add an angry drug lord, his target, two teenagers, a distraught mother, a very large menacing gun and a bunch of muscular goons. I had the feeling it was not going to be a fun night. Boy was I right.

Screams echo around the house. Logan pulls me closer to him as we huddle together under the watchful eyes of a man we have never met. But we have seen him in newspapers everywhere. This man is the dreaded Casper Ross. He's one of the richest drug lords in America. In early May (it's November) he decided to rob a bank. My dad identified him and he was brought in. Casper ended up getting out on bail and fined but that was it. Since my father was the one to identify him Casper had some pent up aggression towards my father hence why he graced my family with his scary and terrifying presence.

Casper bent towards me and tugged on a strand of my hair. I looked away from him and he laughed. Casper grinned at me. Calling out to his goons, "Aw look at this one, she'll be a beautiful piece to my collection." The group of them laughed some more and Logan tightened his grip on me. Casper opened his mouth to say something when a loud bang sounded throughout the house and my mother was pushed down the stairs with her hands handcuffed behind her back. About five minutes ago she had punched one of Casper’s’ men in the jaw and tried to reach the phone. Casper decided to punish her. I guess this was it. I sat their huddled against my brother and flinched when I heard my mother whimper. My father sat crying on the coach and my brother cursed at Casper Ross under his breath.

"Now the fun can begin," the crazed lunatic cackled. He pulled out a gun. After emptying the gun of all its ammunition he placed one bullet in a chamber. "Anyone hear of Russian roulette?" He asked.

I wanted to stay silent but I couldn't control my mouth, "You're kidding me right?"

"I wish I was sweet cheeks," and with that said he pressed the gun to my forehead and pulled the trigger. Silence. I was unharmed. He moved on to my mother next. As he had been loading the gun his goons dragged my family onto the coach. I was next to my mother, she was next to Logan, and he was next to my father.

She looked up at him as he placed the gun to her forehead. She didn't plead for her life all she said was, "You'll rot in hell you bastard".

He smiled down at her, "Well is that so?" She glared at him and nodded slightly. Casper Ross pulled the trigger, and a loud bang occurred. I felt something warm and wet against my cheek. It must have been blood. I was too stunned to react. Around me I saw Casper laughing my father crying and struggling to reach her and Logan with his eyes closed tears dripping off his face.

"She was right you know," my brother muttered, "You will die in hell you bastard." Logan looked at Casper Ross with such hatred. His blue eyes were dark and stormy. Casper drew near him and Logan spat on Casper. I want to tell my brother that what he just did was the stupidest thing in his life. Casper just punched him in the face. Blood flowed out of my brother’s nose like a geyser. Then Casper turned to my father. He added another bullet into his pistol and pointed it at my father.

"Any last words Jake?" Casper grinned.

"I don't regret turning you in. They'll know it was you-" My father was cut off as Casper pulled the trigger. My father’s body slumped to the ground still and unmoving. Blood trickled down his forehead to the floor where it flowed and pooled with my mother blood. Till death do they part. I stared at the blood. It was crimson and precious. We needed it to survive yet... it was monsterous. Blood stained Caspers gun and marked it as evil. That bastard. He'll rot, I don't care if it's jail or in hell, just as long as he rots. I turn to look at him. He's just standing at the epi center smoking a Cubin cigar.

"Why?" I find myself asking in a small voice, "He turned you in.. I get that...but you weren't really punished...so why punish me, Logan, and mom? We were innocent in this mess." I was crying now. I let out a string of wimpers too.

The look on his face was unreadable. He looked sad, but at the same time he looked hard and uneffected. His green eyes seemed to soften, but only for a moment. I wonder if he had a family once. I bet they were killed... that's why he's so cruel. It's got to be.

He turned to me and pressed a cloth up to my nose. It was chloroform. I shouldn't have breathed it in but at this point I was looking for an escape from what had just happened. Maybe it was his way of being humane. So when they asked me where he went I could give an honest answer of I don't know. The chemical haze soon overwhelmed my brain and everything went black.

*** Twelve Hours Later***

I woke to blinding lights. Hospital lights. That meant everything was true. My brother and I were orphans. Casper Ross had just killed my parents. I started to cry. I couldn't contain the tears any longer. Soon wails were escaping from my throat and I screamed myself hoarse. I was an emotional train wreck. My sobs must have attracted attention because soon a nurse came into the room. She smiled at me with pity.

"How are you feeling?" she asked and then realizing what I had just been through she blushed, "I'm so sorry for your losses." She murmured and hugged me. It was comforting and reminded me of mom. I tried to speak but all that came out was a unhuman sound. She handed me a glass of water, which I drank slowly. Once I was done I handed the glass back to her and she placed it on a cart.

"Where's Logan?" I asked not knowing what had happened to him after I was knocked unconscious. Was he dead as well? I started to cry again. I couldn't live with myself if Logan had died. It would have been like only having half of my being alive.

"Shhh... Shhh..." the nurse, her name tag said Angelica, patted me on the back, "It's all right, he's right next door." I sighed contentedly and smiled a bit.

I was about to speak again when there was a knock on the door. A woman wearing aviator sunglasses approached. She motioned for Angelica to exit. Angelica gave me a small knowing smile and quickly exited the room. The woman entered and walked over to my bed.

“I am Agent Stephanie Adams. It is very important that you let me finish and not interrupt, okay?” She asked, I nodded and she continued, “ I work for Witness Protection Program. Due to the murder of your parents we are placing you in a new environment. You and your brother, to the public, were killed in the attack as well as your parents. You will be given new identities and new looks.”

I just nodded and she gave me a small smile. “My partner,” she continued, “is telling Logan the exact same thing. How do you think he’ll take it?”

“Poorly” I respond. I see a man in aviators come to the glass window. He is about to knock on it when I tap Agent Adam’s shoulder and she quickly exits to speak with him. After a few moments she reenters the room.

Leaning over my bed she whispers in my ear, “Looks like you’re moving to Ireland. Melody.”
