The Nanny

First Day

There is something about waking up in a soft bed with your infant tucked into your side after months of sleeping on a sofa. It had to be one of the best feelings in the worlds really.

I cuddled Jamie closer to my chest and held his morning bottle up to his pouty lips and really took in how lucky I was to have Anne on my side because I had no doubt that if I didn't have her blessing Harry wouldn't have thought twice about kicking me right out of his house that first day.

In a total of one hour I would start my first official day of being little miss Darcy's nanny and I was actually really excited about it. Darcy was a doll, even as she was obviously spoiled by her ‘uncles' and father, she still had that sweetness to her that made you want to be near her. Not most rich daddy's girls could say that.

I quietly spoke soothing words to Jamie as I intently listened to what I was assuming was Harry clomping around in his room as he prepared for the day. I can't image it was easy for him to leave Darcy in my care with the strained relationship we have going on but I was going to make it my mission for him to realize I wouldn't hold Darcy accountable for her father's shortcomings.

It wasn't long before there was three short, loud, knocks at my door, that made both myself and Jamie jump, and Harry's grumpy voice filtering through.

"I'm leaving. Darcy will be up shortly, feed her and don't mess up."

No good morning. No good bye.

"Jack ass."

"What was that?" He responded. My eyes widened. I hadn't realized he was still there and listening.

"Nothing. Have a good day you lovely ray of sunshine you."

I heard him scoff from the other side of the door, which made me smirk, before his heavy foot falls sounded down the stairs and out the door.

My eyes dropped down to Jamie who was smiling up at me from around his bottle.

"Yay. He's gone." I cheered quietly, beaming down at my son and pumping a fist in the air. He giggled like he knew what I was talking about. "Now let's go get breakfast ready for Darcy."

I quickly got myself and Jamie dressed before making my way down the steps with him. "We're going to have so much fun today, just you, me and Darcy. No big meanie man around to ruin the joy." I said in a baby voice while placing Jamie on a fluffy blanket with a few toys in eyesight of the kitchen while I got to mixing pancake batter.

As soon as I had a decent amount of pancakes cooked I made my way over to Jamie who had rolled himself around giddily on the blanket.

"Let's go wake up Darcy, little man." I cooed holding him to my side while I made my way back up the stairs.

Yesterday, while moving in, I hadn't had much of a chance to actually see inside of Darcy's room, but now as Jamie and I quietly made our way to the pink bed in the pale purple room I had the opportunity to examine the perfectly decorated little girl's room.

It was any four year old girls dream room with the large stuffed animals and baby dolls and ballerina portraits, the netting around the bed had pretty little colorful butterflies attached to it and multiple pink and purple fluffy pillows were thrown about the bed.

It was about the time I started to muse to myself that there were more than enough pillows for an army let alone such a tiny little thing as Darcy that I realized pillows were all that were on the bed.

"Darcy?" I called into the room, wondering if she had already gotten up on her own. I hadn't heard any sign of her waking up yet.

No answer followed.

With furrowed eyebrows I leaned over, Jamie still happily resting on my side, to look under the bed.

Nothing.

I looked over towards her closet, the light was switched on but there was no sign of her in there either.

Biting my lip, I left the room and made my way over to the equally pink and purple bathroom. It was empty as well.

"Darcy?" I called out again, stopping at my room to check if she had gone to look for me.

Slight panic set in as I didn't find her in my room, bathroom, or Jamie's still empty room.

I hesitated for a second at Harry's door before deciding that finding Darcy was of more importance then not invading his privacy.

"Darcy, baby, are you in here?"

I vaguely registered the very masculine décor of the room, like a woman had never lived in that particular room of the house but it was just a passing thought as my mind was much more focused on finding the little four year old girl.

When I was sure I had looked in every room, bathroom, and closet of the second floor I made my way hastily down the steps.

"DARCY?!" Even I could hear the higher pitch urgency in my own voice as I rushed from the front hall to the lounge to the dining room and back to the kitchen.

"Where is she?" I asked myself, bouncing Jamie on my hip nervously. "Darcy, please come out." I begged desperately.

I could feel my heart rate pick up the longer she was missing. Looking down at Jamie I decided to place him back on the blanket so I could do a run of the house again.

I dashed up the steps as quickly as possible, re-searching all the rooms, before doing the same downstairs with the same result.

Darcy was missing.

I felt tears well in my eyes and my hands grip at my loose hair, the sound of my blood rushing in my ears. It was safe to say I was terrified.

"DARCY?!" I shouted out again, this time it sounded more like a scream then anything.

"What's going on?" A new voice asked calmly from behind me as I stood in the kitchen.

My nerves were already frazzled by Darcy's MIA status and this intrusion just sent me over the edge. Instinctively I grabbed the first thing I could and placed myself between Jamie and the stranger.

"Who are you?" I demanded, holding my weapon out in front of me. All I could think was he took Darcy.

The man held his hands out in front of him with a concerned look on his face.

"I'm Liam. Harry left his song book here, he asked me to pick it up on my way to the studio." He informed calmly as he stepped closer to me.

"Don't come near me or I'll-"

"Wisk me to death?" Liam asked cocking an eyebrow.

I finally had enough clarity to look down at my ‘weapon' of choice which was in fact the whisk I had been using earlier on the batter.

"I'm a friend of Harry's, and you're Aria, Darcy's nanny."

I dropped my hand to my side, taking in a shaky breath at his words. I believed him, mostly because I didn't think anyone who could look at me like that was capable of lying.

We just stared at each other for a moment before the tears started up again on my part and the shot rush of adrenaline wore off causing my hands to shake.

"I've lost her... Harry's going to kill me... My first day..."

Liam's eyes widened and he was by my side in an instant, hand on my shoulders. "Hey, calm down. Tell me what happened?" Even though he was trying to sooth me I could still make out the urgency in his voice.

"I went to wake Darcy up but she wasn't in bed... I looked everywhere but she wasn't anywhere and then I called her name and she didn't answer and Harry already hates me and now I've lost his daughter and poor Darcy must be so scared and oh my god where is she, I have to find her. Liam help me find her." I cried out in on breath.

Liam listened to me explain, his expression getting harder as I spoke. I could imagine he was thinking what a complete failure I was and how he would help Harry murder me later.

"Harry didn't tell you?"

"Tell me what?" I sniffed, flailing my hands around as I sobbed.

"He's such a... ugh." Liam shook his head and reached for my hand. "Come on."

"Wait." I called out, pulling away and rushing to grab Jamie before returning to Liam's side. After all of the fear I was already going through at the thought of losing Darcy there was no way my son was going to be out of my sight.

Liam led me up the steps once more before stopping at the top and turning to me. "It's been a while, so it might take a bit. I think her spot has changed."

I furrowed my brow and shook my head, completely lost. "Wha-"

"Shhh." Liam informed holding his finger to his lips. "Marco." Liam called out.

It took a few seconds but sure enough a very faint "Polo" followed.

My eyes widened as I looked at Liam but he was focused on where the call had come from.
"Marco." He called again, inching closer to Harry's room.

"Polo." The call was cleared and a bit louder now.

Liam nodded his head towards the door and we both made our way into Harry's room once again. We stood in the center of the room listening for any sign of movement. A slight rustling sound came from Harry's closet and we both made our way over to it.

"I looked in here Liam. Twice!" I informed. I was sure I hadn't seen a thing either time.

Liam looked from me then down to the floor. "Marco."

"Polo." The pile of clothes bunched in the back answered.

My mouth dropped open as I fell back from my squatting position onto my butt. Liam reached forward and pulled the now giggling pile towards him.

"There you are." He laughed along with the squirming little girl. "That was a very naughty trick to play. Aria has been looking all over for you. You scared her. She doesn't know about our game so it wasn't very nice to hide from her like that." Liam gently scolded.

Darcy quickly tucked her head in the crook of Liam's neck and pouted. "Daddy doesn't like her."

"What?" Liam asked, a little surprised by her words.

I wasn't nearly as surprised. Harry hadn't made it a secret and children tend to be very perceptive.

"Daddy said she was trouble."

Liam's eyes widened as he looked at me over Darcy's head. I just shrugged. "Darcy, daddy was just joking. Aria is very nice. She's my friend and she wants to be your friend too." Liam tried to reason.

I smiled softly at the little girl as she looked at me suspiciously. "Hey babe, remember we had fun the other day. We talked about Tinkerbell and we chased you're crazy uncles." I reminded, hoping to gain back the ground I had before Harry ruined it.

Darcy looked at me for a long time before nodding and pulling away from Liam. She sent me a hesitant smile.

"I thought we could play again today. Would you like that?" I asked.

Again Darcy nodded, curls bobbing.

"And she's made pancakes. They smell really good." Liam added.

Darcy bit her lip and rubbed her little belly. "I'm hungry." She informed.

"I bet you are sweet heart. Come on let's get some food in your tummy." I said rubbing her arm before slowly standing myself up.

"Can I help you take care of the baby?" Darcy asked excitedly as we walked out of Harry's room.

"Sure hun. Let's get you feed first then you can help me feed Jamie."

As soon as I had Darcy safely sitting at the table, eating a plate of cut up pancakes I turned to let Liam know exactly how grateful I was to him.

"Thank you so much. I was... I was about to lose my mind."

"No problem. Harry should have told you. She's been playing that game since she could understand it. It wasn't fair of him to not inform you."

I nodded. I was completely livid at Harry. He set me up to fail from the start. Weather it was intentional or not, he was going to hear from me when we got home.

"I'm just glad she's okay."

Liam nodded before patting my shoulder. "Well I really should be going. I'm sure I'll be the last on there, but don't worry about Harry, he'll be getting an earful from me when I get there."

"And from me when he gets here."

"I wouldn't expect any less from what I've heard." Liam laughed as he made his way out of the kitchen. "It was nice meeting you Aria." He said just as we made it to the door. Jamie reached out and babbled loudly to which Liam looked down at him and smiled. "And you too Jamie. I'll see you later, I'm sure."

"Yeah. Thank you again Liam, you're a life saver." I said and waved him off.

As soon as the door was closed I had my back against it and my eyes shut tight. Taking a few deep breathes I looked at Jamie. "Do all of his friends have to be attractive? Is this some kind of sick joke?"

Jamie just laughed happily at my distress.
