The Nanny

Moving Day

For the second time in four days I was standing in front of the glass doors that would be my new home, or rather live-in job.

I looked down at my smiling little boy, took a deep breath in and knocked on the door.

This time instead of an insanely hot boy answering, Anne's smiling face greeted me. Her eyes quickly shifted to the bundle in my arms though as she cooed at my son.

"Oh he's gorgeous Aria. Can I see him?" She asked holding out her arms for me to place my baby in.

I beamed as I watched the older woman smile sweetly at Jamie as he garbled at her showing off his one solemn tooth that was just beginning to peek out of his gums.

I watched as Anne interacted with Jamie, smiling at how easy it came to her. I hoped one day I could be as natural and at ease as her. Most days it just felt like I was lost and I was sure I was mentally scaring Jamie or damaging him in some way. My biggest fear was that I would somehow cause him to need therapy when he was older but I loved him so very much and it was common knowledge babies didn't come with and instruction manual so I would just have to power through and hope for the best.

"Um... what should I..." I trailed off after a few minutes of awkwardly standing in the doorway holding one of only three bags that contained all my earthly possessions. I looked back at Kendra's car that I had borrowed for the day where the other two bags where with the rather large box continuing the only thing I had been able to buy for my son besides the basics.

"Oh!" Anne jumped slightly, coming out of her baby induced haze. "Niall! Zayn!" She shouted back into the house then turned to me. "Let me just get the boys to help you. Harry should be back soon."

I tried to stop her, to tell her I didn't really need help moving in the three bags and unbuilt crib but she insisted, not letting me speak.

Niall's cheery face soon greeted me followed by yet another attractive man, this time in the tall, dark, and mysterious verity.

"ARI!" Niall yelled, clearly happy to see me.

I grinned back at him and walked into his extended arms for the hug he was offering.
"You're finally here, been waiting all day to see your pretty face."

I blushed at his words and tried to hide behind my hair but Niall wasn't having any of that, he quickly pulled me to his side and turned to face the other guy. "Zayn this is Aria, the nanny."

I smiled at the introduction. Apparently I would now been known as ‘Aria, the nanny' like it was some royal title. Well I suppose it was my title now.

I looked up shyly at the ridiculously handsome male and waved quickly.

He smirked at me and held his hand out to me, obviously catching on to my new found shyness.

It wasn't something that happened to me often, I tended to be a bit more outspoken but something about all these attractive people around me was throwing me off. It didn't help any that their friend, my boss, and as it turned out new roommate, hated me.

I would be lying if I said Harry wasn't attractive since I'm pretty sure I would be struck down by lightning if I denied he was sex on a stick but his whole attitude ruined it for me, which I guess was a good thing because like I mentioned before: boss, roommate, enemy.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's not fair that they are all so damn good-looking, it should be illegal really for the reason that it was starting to be a problem to my thought process.

"Hello Aria, I'm Zayn. I've heard a lot about you. Mostly from Harry but Niall hasn't stopped talking about you either."

I cringed at the greeting. I'm sure Harry gave Zayn the rundown of our first encounter and somehow twisted it to make me the frosty bitch who assaulted him but Zayn didn't look like he was going to give anything away with his sexy little grin.

I had to look away.

Luckily for me Niall quickly squeezed my shoulder and broke the awkward silence that had taken up the room. I realized that somewhere during our little greeting and introduction, Anne had kidnapped my son into the house.

"So where's your stuff. Zayn and I are ready to help you in any way we can." Niall offered happily.

I heard Zayn chuckle under his breath and shook his head as Niall shot him a look, making me feel like I was missing something.

"Um..." I looked between a highly amused Zayn and a slightly flushed Niall before pulling away and shaking my hair out of my face. "Well, I really don't have a lot, just a few bags but I could use some help with Jamie's crib. It's kind of big and heavy and awkward."

"Let's get your bags in the house, and then Zayn and I will go back for the crib." Niall instructed as we all made our way out the door. "Jamie? That's your son right?"

I smiled back at him and nodded.

"I'd like to meet him." Niall said falling into step beside me as we walked towards Kendra's car.
"He's inside. Anne has him." I said gesturing towards the house.

Niall was just about to say something when a dark Range Rover pulled up beside us.

Zayn stepped up to the driver's side door to greet Harry as he stepped out wearing dark shades over his eyes and by the chill bumps that grew on my flesh I had a feeling he was glaring at me from behind.

I looked away and leaned down into the back seat to pull out one of the bags before handing it to Niall.

"You're here already?" Harry's snide tone drifted to my ears as I had my back towards him. I shut my eyes and took a few deep breaths, hoping to gain enough strength not to slap him silly.

"Hi Harry, how are you today?" I said turning around and smiling sweetly at him.

Zayn again chuckled under his breath from just behind Harry and Niall hid his grin by turning away and hiking the strap to the large duffle bag I had handed him higher on his shoulder.

Harry just looked my way, sunglasses still perched on his funny looking nose, mouth stretched into a thin lipped frown.

We both just stood there, me grinning and him scowling, sizing each other up.

My grin grew when he shook his head and scoffed, turning to head into the house without a word to anyone.

I chuckled as began to drag the other bag out of the back seat, gloating silently at my obvious win.

"You know, I'm really glad you're here, Aria. I have a feeling things are going to get very interesting here with you around." Zayn said, startling me a bit with his close proximity. I giggled and handed him the bag before following them both into the house.

Niall and Zayn disappeared up the steps but Anne stopped me before I could follow.

"I wanted to give you a quick tour of the house." She said happily as she led me up the stairs.

She pointed out Darcy's room which was right at the top of the stairs and Harry's which was the last room down the hall, the bathrooms and hall closets. She then pulled me up to the second to last door on the opposite side of the hall from Darcy and Harry's rooms.

"This, dear, is your room. " Anne said, stepping aside to let me walk into the nicely furnished room with a big window facing the back yard that already had my bags resting on the floor. I couldn't help my jaw dropping at the sight. It was much more than I ever expected. Certainly the whole house was lovely but I never thought that I would have a room like this for myself. After months of sleeping on a sofa, a bed that was mine was enough but this was much more then I had thought.

"Wow." I breathed out; out of the corner of my eye I could see Anne beaming at me. "This is wonderful. Thank you so much." I looked around the room once more before looking back out the door. "I'll just have Niall and Zayn put Jamie's crib over there so I can build it." I pointed to the open space by the window.

The look Anne gave me made me furrow my brow. Did she not want me to put the crib there?
"Why would you put the crib in here?"

I was completely confused now.

"Just have the boys build it in Jamie's nursery."

I froze at her words, my mind unable to process what she said. She must have been able to tell I was at a loss for words because she reached for my hand and pulled me into the room towards a door I had assumed was a closet, even though I could now clearly see the empty walk in closet to the left of this door.

She walked me into a small but well put together bathroom with a light blue and white color scheme and towards another door that lead into a separate room. This room was completely empty with the exception of a dresser and a rocking chair, the walls a bare white.

My free hand shot up to my mouth as tears sprung to my eyes.

I had no idea what to say as my heart swelled in my chest.

I had very little to give to my son, a room being one of those things and here I was, standing in someone else's home as they not only offered me a space of my own but gave me a space for my son.

I had no words to accurately express my gratitude towards Anne in that moment. All I could manage was to turn and hug her, hoping the message would get across.

She quickly responded by squeezing me back and laughing.

"Thank you so much. This is so much more then I expected. You didn't have to do this at all but... thank you."

She smiled and pulled away. "You're welcome dear, but really it was Harry's idea."

Again I froze.

Harry had done this.

I found it hard to believe but the look Anne sent me made it hard to think she was lying. I nodded and stepped back, wondering why Harry would do something so nice for me when he made it clear he didn't like me.

"We didn't decorate because we thought it was something you would like to do."

I internally cringed. I appreciated the gesture but I knew it would be quite some time before I would be able to decorate this lovely room; however I didn't want to tell her that.

"Oh... I see you've seen your surprise." Niall said as he and Zayn stepped through the door leading into the hall carrying the large box that contained Jamie's crib.

As soon as it was set down, he looked to me with a wide grin. "You like it?"

I nodded, looking down, still wondering at Harry's motives.

And then I realized something. "Anne, where's Jamie?" I asked at the absence of my baby.

"Oh downstairs, Harry was keeping an eye on him while Darcy ate her lunch."

My eyes widened. It was one thing to leave Jamie with Anne, but I didn't know how I felt about Harry watching him.

Without a word I walked out of the room as calmly as I could, not wanting to make Anne think I didn't trust her son even though that was exactly what was going through my head.

As soon as I was out of sight I rushed down the steps and into the kitchen.

I stopped dead in my tracks at the sight before me.

Darcy sat, legs swigging from the stool she sat on, as she happily ate her sandwich and just in front of her on the others side of the breakfast bar stood Harry with his back to me as he bounced and cooed at my smiling baby boy. Even from my angle I could see the genuine smile on Harry's face as he spoke gibberish to Jamie who was patting his chubby little hands onto the older man's cheeks and giggling.

It made my heart melt and an odd feeling stir in the pit of my stomach. It was probably the most precious sight I had seen in a long time. It made me feel like I was intruding on a moment even though Jamie was my son and not Harry's. All worry about Harry looking after my son gone.

I kept quiet for a bit longer, wanting to soak up the warm feelings this was giving me.

I realized that as much as I enjoyed it, at the same time it made my heart hurt. Jamie was never going to have this. This family unit illusion was never going to be something I could give my son, or at least not anything I could give him anytime soon.

As the new feeling of despair set in I stepped forward and cleared my throat. Harry quickly spun around; his vary large hand spanning the entirety of Jamie's back as he held him protectively to his chest. It was all very paternal of him.

"Um..." Harry said, for the first time sounding unsure in front of me, his eyes anywhere but on me. He took the few steps towards me and gently handed Jamie back to me. He smiled sweetly at the baby before letting the grin drop from his face as he looked up at me.

Two completely different people.

Harry Styles was two completely different people and I found that I wished I knew the other Harry, despite myself.

"Thank you." I said quietly, smoothing Jamie's dark hair back as he rested his little cheek on my shoulder.

"No problem. He's great." Harry brushed off, turning away from me and making his way towards the refrigerator.

"Um... not that. Thank you for the...um... rooms. I... it means a lot to me."

Harry looked back at me, his eyes squinting like he was waiting for me to add a ‘but' to that or finish with a snide remark. I just looked back at him hoping he understood my sincerity as I smiled softly and shyly at him.

His eyes opened a little wider as he looked at me like he had just met me right now.

After a few seconds he nodded and turned away again. "You're welcome."

And so went our first civilized conversation. I wondered vaguely if we would be able to keep it up because I kind of liked it.
