I Can't Help It
Chapter 25.
It was Monday, after school, and I was sitting in Kelly's with Sandy haveing a normal conversation.
" Sandy I have a question." I said.
" You know you can ask me anything." She sipped her tea. I sat my bagel down and leaned back.
" Do you think there's someone out there for everyone?" I asked.
She looked out the window with a thinking face before back at me.
" Yeah. Why?"
" Do you think that it's possible you blew your one and only chance with that certain person?"
" Well I think everything happens for a reason."
I sat back and crossed my arms, which only interested Sandy even more.
" Did you and Andy break up?"
" No."
" Then why do you think you blew it with him?"
" I don't. He's just the rebound." I said. I couldn't meet her eyes.
" What are you talking about?"
I sighed, leaning foward.
" Sandy, there's been something I've wanted to tell yo-"
Right then he walked in, and rushed to my table.
" Maria. We need to talk."
" Not right now Andy."
" Im sorry ok?"
" Go. I'm in the middle of a conversation."
" That can wait."
" Excuse me?" I asked. Sandy stood up.
" Id better get going."
I nodded while she left and Andy took her seat.
" That was rude." I told him.
" Well I need to tell you something." He said.
" What is it?" I asked. Andy leaned foward and grabbed my hand on the table.
" Maria, we've been dating long enough and I think I can finally say it with true meaning."
" What-"
" I love you Maria. And I'm sorry I left you at the party."
I froze. I'm pretty sure my heart stopped beating.
" You don't love me." I said.
" Yes I do."
" no you don't."
" Why don't I?"
I sighed, knowing I would explain myself.
" Because when you're young, your hoping that this person will be the right one. The one your going to be in love with forever. But sometimes, you want that so much, you create something that really isn't there." I got up and stormed to the door. Leaving him sitting there by himself. I got in my car drove down the rode, to my thinking spot.
I got out and walked across the park to the pond, when I noticed someone sitting on the bench I liked to sit on. I dug my hands deep into my pockets as I approached the bench and sat down on the other end. I knew who was sitting there. I knew him all too well. He knew I was there too.
" Hey Maria."
I looked out at the ducks.
" Hey Harry."
he sighed.
" How was your day?" He asked.
" It was good. How about yours?" I asked.
" Good."
We both knew we were lying to one another. We both knew that this was the spot we come to, when times got hard.
" You look good." He said.
" So do you."
I saw a mother duck and her ducklings slowly glide across the cold water.
" Remember those ducks we saw in Ireland?" I asked. He smiled, thinking about the memory.
" Yeah."
" You remember what happened that night?" I asked. He nodded, smile soon fading.
" Yeah."
We sat there in silence a bit longer. It wasnt even awkward silence. Just the fact that we were near eachother was enough.
" Do you remember the fight you got in with Will?" He chuckled. I giggled.
" Yes."
" It surprised me because you seem more of a lover than a fighter." He said in his deep raspy accent.
" Hey, never judge a book by its cover."
Out of the corner of my eye I saw him turn his head to look at me.
" But I did."
" On that first day. When we made eye contact."
" I fell in love. And you smiled because you knew." He finished for me. I looked up and smiled at him.
" William Shakespeare."
" Yep."
" That fits perfectly with us."
" It does." He said.
I pulled out my phone and checked the time.
" I've got to go actually. Goodbye Harry." I said.
" Goodbye Maria." He smirked, showing off one of his dimples. If it wouldn't have been so cold outside I swear I would have melted. I stood up and walked away. That little conversation, turned my whole day into one of the best says of my life. Because its the little things in life that fills me with joy.
