I headed back home directly after my classes ended, deep down I knew if I was going to be late, the day will not pass without an argument with Melrose. The taxi dropped me off at my place and I ran inside just to save more time. “Right on time. Get up and fix your bag we leave in 20 minutes.” These were the words Melrose greeted me with every time I arrived home; all I did was nod and rush upstairs to grab my bag. I packed all of my stuff in a bag and changed into a training suite and sneakers. “I’m not taking you to see the president! Hurry up!” She yelled from downstairs, and that was my cue to leave my room and hop in her car outside.




“Listen child, in order for you to stay in your university, you need to work. Or else you know that the house has infinite chores crying for you to start them up. Stop day dreaming and focus with me when I’m talking to you! (She turns to look at me and then notices my headphones in my ears.) Ugh! Take those off..Now!!” She yelled with a pitch higher than my excellent sound proof headphones provided; I jumped in my seat from shock and did what she said, then I focused my eyes on the window scenes. When will this torture end...





“Welcome to a great night filled with lust, temptation, and beauty! I want you all to raise your glasses up in the air and enjoy the girls you always wait for!! The girls that melt your hearts and pockets!! I give you The Sparkling Jewels!!!!” Melrose announced on the stage and all of those drunken men cheered like street dogs and they even howled like beasts for me and the other girls.”Don’t worry Maddie; just do like we always agreed to do, dance with your mind setting up a different location. Come on we are up now.” Charlie spoke to me and patted my back to snap me out of my isolated soul. Charlie was one of the girls that I danced with. She was 19, but she never told me why is she here. I always wondered what caused this innocent girl to work here; look who’s talking... What about myself? Charlie was the closest friend that knew about my life, we shared a lot of interests and we always stood for each other whenever a rebellious drunk tried to touch us in the wrong manner.




I drew a tiny smile on my face while me, Charlie, and the rest of the 6 dancers walked up the stage and preformed our routine. I hated the trashy costumes they made us wear, the excess makeup that made us look 30 years old, but mostly what I hated was the money that costumers showered us with. This action made me feel that my humanity can be easily sold for some green paper flicked over me; that always made me consider that money is nothing compared to morals and knowledge. Other people might say: “This is all because I dance a little? This is heaven.” If only they knew that the loss of their IQ and morals is larger than the LITTLE dance they perform.
