The Nanny
Chapter 21
With my heels in my hands, I walked on the beach, looking for Harry. I headed closer to the water as time went on. The fact that he asked me to meet him here yet I couldn’t find him was really annoying.
I looked at the night sky, the moon was eerily beautiful. I think my favorite part was that there were no stars. That simple fact allowed the moon to shine in all its glory; there were no distractions taking your attention away from it.
I took a deep breath and sat down on the sand. Tucking my feet closer to my chest. I placed my heels beside me and watched the waves crash softly onto one another. I’ve been living in that beach house, a few miles away from here, for over a week now; and not one night had I gotten the chance to go out and actually enjoy the water. The sound of the waves alone was enough to mentally relax a person.
“I told you to meet me at the restaurant next to the beach, not on the beach.”
I jumped at the sound of his voice. Harry sat down next to me, mimicking the position I was in.
“Oliver told me to come out here on the beach.” I replied quietly as I turned my attention back to the moon.
“Can’t trust that guy to do anything right.” Harry shook his head.
I turned to him and gave him a sympathetic smile, “Sorry about what happened in there. Must be tough having your best friend do that.” I really did feel bad about it. No one deserved that.
He looked at me blankly before bursting into laughter.
“What’s so funny?” I asked frustratedly
He didn’t stop laughing, so I pushed him, trying to get him to regain his composure.
He finally stopped and sat back up, an amused smile still planted on his face, “For fucks sake Zoe, do you really think I care?”
“I just thought it’d be annoying having your girlfriend and best friend do that. But I guess you truly don’t care about anything, do you?” I suddenly got annoyed as I remembered the conversation I overheard him and Oliver have.
“Where’s all this coming from?” He asked as he turned my head to face him.
“Cut the crap, would you?” I snapped my head away, “I overheard the conversation you had with Oliver.”
“What conversation?”
“The one where you asked him to get me off your back because you couldn’t put up with me any longer. I know I can be difficult sometimes, but all you had to do was ask me to back off and I would have happily obliged. There was no need to get your friend involved.”
“Wow.” He said as let out a humorless laugh, “have you gone insane?”
I wanted to yell at him, but decided to not waste my time. Instead I stood up and started to walk away.
I was a few feet away when I heard him yell, “Hold on Cinderella. You forgot your glass slippers.”
I turned around to see him catching up to me, my heels in his hands.
“I’m not cinderella.” I said as I snatched the heels from him and turned around.
“And I’m not prince charming,” He said as he pulled me back to face him, “but for some god- damn reason I want to be him…..for you.”
I snorted a laugh, “If that was true then why’d you ask Oliver to take me off your hands?”
“Can’t you see that we weren’t talking about you?” he half-yelled, “The whole time I was pretending to be Carmen’s boyfriend, but she was getting too attached so I asked him if he could help me. We planned all of this out. I didn’t care that she cheated on me because we set that up! My father would have kicked me out of the house if I broke up with Carmen and ruined his deal, so we made it seem as though she cheated on me, that way I wouldn’t get in trouble and I wouldn’t get kicked out.”
“You went through all that trouble to not be kicked out?” I said in disbelief.
“Yes, and you wanna know why?” he asked as he took a step closer to me, “Because if I got kicked out then not only would I be separated from Alek, but I’d also be separated from you……...and I wasn’t about to let that happen. Not for some worthless business deal or for some spoiled brat.”
My mouth dropped in shock. I suddenly felt extremely, unbelievably, stupid. I guess this is what happens when you make assumptions. If I had just summoned the courage and confronted him about it when it first happened I could’ve saved all of us the heart ache.
“Harry...I’m sorry I -”
“You’re an idiot who jumps to conclusions before asking others what really happened.” he said.
I looked up at him from under my eyelashes; he was right.
He took my hand in his and whispered, “But you’re my idiot.”
My heart started to race uncontrollably as he yanked me closer. He quickly captured my lips, and I surprised myself when I responded immediately. It was warm, and his lips were soft. Passion burned within the kiss, desire init too. Our eyes were closed, both of us savoring the moment. His arms wrapped around my waist tightly, pulling me even closer as I wrapped my arms around his neck. We could hear the waves crashing behind us, and we could even feel the slight ocean breeze. The moment was perfect. Who knows? Maybe fairytales really do come true. And yeah, he’s not the exact replica of prince charming. But to be honest, I didn’t want him to be. I’d take his tattoos and messy hair over the preppy, and ‘too-perfect’, prince charming any day.
