The Nanny
Chapter 12
"Did you bitch slap her?" Rae questioned through the phone. Whenever something happened in my life that i needed to talk about i always went to her first.
"No," i sighed and picked at my nail "i was holding Alek which made that kind of hard. Either way what was i supposed to do? I'm in HER home, if i hit her then she'd have an excuse to kick me out which would leave her alone with Alek, what would be the use in that?"
“Good point” Rae exhaled, “Are you going to tell Harry?”
I paused. The thought didn’t occur to me before. Perhaps it would have been smart to have told him right away. He should know what a lovely little thing he’s in a relationship with; note the sarcasm. I shook the thought away, “No. I can’t. Rae, he’s going out with her.”
I heard a faint gasp through the phone as I laid on the bed.
“But what about you guys? and the pool thing? didn't you say he kissed you, like, today?”
How could I have been so naive and gullible? The anger inside me boiled up, I could actually feel it flowing through my body and up to my head. “Yeah, he did. It was absurd of me to actually believe something was happening between us. Rae he just used me, like a dirty old rag. Before he came up to my room he had made it official with that piece of shit”. The words came out harsher than I intended. I smacked my forehead, I didn’t mean to sound this rude to Rae, it wasn’t like she was the one who did anything.
“Fucking asshole. I knew it from the start. Seems to me Carmen and Harry are perfect for one another” She spat
Relief washed over me, she was taking my side. I looked over at Alek who was unconscious on the bed. His chest slowly rose and fell again, and a slight snore could be heard from him. I smiled at his innocence, “Rae, you need to come over”
“When are you guys going back home” she questioned.
“No, no. just come over tomorrow to the beach house. I overheard Harry inviting one of his friends, and I’ll be damned if I’m alone in a house with the three of them. Plus, his father said that they were going away to Florida for a bit, and I’ll introduce you as a helper, like a nanny in training or something.”
“Is it really that important to you?”
“Yes” I gulped
There was a short silence before she spoke up again, “Alright, assistant nanny at your service. Text me the address, alright?”
I smiled, “Alright”
I waited for the *click* sound on the other line before finally taking the phone away from my ear. My hands were trembling. This always happened when my nerves got the best of me. I would normally take whatever it was that was unsettling and sort through it until i was calm again, but this time was different. I had no idea what was causing my body to behave in this manner. There was nothing to be anxious about, but yet here I was, stomach in twists.
I turned to my side and pulled the string of the lamp so that the lights would go out. I forced my eyes closed and listened to my own breathing. It didn’t take long for me to pass out.

“Zoe”
I felt someone poking my arm. I groaned as I turned to face whoever it was. Alek.
My mood instantly lightened.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, not noticing the sun shining through the window.
He smiled, “your phone”
I took the phone out of his hand and it vibrated again.
I stretched, yawning in the process “Hello?”
“I’m outside” Rae groaned
“Ok so come inside”
“No, i don’t want to ring the doorbell. It’s awkward. Just come and open the door”
I hung the phone up and went downstairs. Harry, his friend Oliver, and Carmen were sitting in the living room watching TV.
“Where ya going?” Oliver asked from the couch.
I gave him a weird look, “Like it matters to you”. I rushed to the door and opened it. Rae was right there, a duffle bag hanging loosely on her shoulder.
“Took you long enough” she said as she jumped to hug me. We started laughing like crazy, it’s been awhile since we’ve actually hung out. Most of our conversations are via the telephone. When we pulled away I noticed that everyone had crowded around us. Alek came to my side and Rae smiled at him.
“I’m Carmen” Carmen smiled as she stuck her hand out to greet Rae. Rae ignored her.
“You must be Alek,” she said as she picked him up into a hug, “Zoe tells me that you’re the best out of alllll the Cline men”
I watched as Carmen dropped her hand to her side, trying to pretend it was nothing.
Alek giggled, “It’s true” he replied to Rae.
Harry raised an eyebrow at me but I ignored him. I grabbed her duffle bag but Andrew took it from me, “I have a purpose you know” he smiled. I nodded my head and refocused my attention on Rae, “Are you hungry?”
She shook her head and put Alek down, “But I am bored, what do you guys do around here anyway?”
Before I could answer Carmen cleared her throat, “I’m sorry but we can’t allow anymore guests”
“She’s not a guest,” I said, “she’s a nanny in training. The company I work for sent her and she has to help me with Alek for a while. So you have no choice but to let her stay”
I didn’t work for a company and they didn’t send her, but what Carmen doesn't know won't hurt her.
She fake smiled at me and returned to her seat on the couch. Harry and Oliver stared at us uncomfortably.
“What?” I asked in annoyance
“I’m Oliver” he extended a hand to Rae and she shook it
Harry shook her hand as well “and I’m Harry”
“Oh I know.” Rae replied, “My names Raven but everyone calls me Rae, and I prefer it that way”
She looked at me again, "I wasn't joking when I said I was bored"
"You guys can watch movies with us" Oliver said, still keeping his eyes on Rae. She had that affect on most guys, well actually all guys.
Harry grabbed my arm, "come on, we have a lot of movies. It'll be boring without you guys."
As i pulled my hand away his face dropped, "actually i wanted to go for a walk on the beach. I need to go over some rules about being a nanny with Rae"
Rae looked at Harry and laughed, "sorry, but she's the boss."
We pushed past them and grabbed Alek. I held one of his hands while Rae held the other. We walked through the house, onto the patio, and finally on the beach.
Rae looked at me "That wasn't awkward or anything"
I rolled my eyes, "Now you know how I've felt since I've gotten here"
We walked in silence, the breeze was soothing.
"Can I build a sand castle?" Alek eagerly asked.
I nodded my head and he let go of our hands as he ran closer to the water. We sat down in the sand and watched Alek.
Rae crossed her legs and ran her fingers through the sand "Are we going to be ignoring them the whole time?"
I wasn't sure what we were going to be doing. I guess I wanted to be around him, but now that he's with Carmen I just find it hard to look at him without getting mad.
I picked at the sand "Probably"
Rae smiled, "That's a lie. You know you don't want to avoid him, I saw the sexual tension between you too"
I gasped and threw the sand I held at her, "There was none of that! If anything it was hate you sensed"
She laughed again, "Whatever. I've known you long enough to figure out what you're thinking." She paused and took a breath, "I know what we can do"
I looked at her confused, "what?"
She smirked, "We can make them miserable. You know? Get Carmen jelous and get Harry mad that he can't have you."
"You're crazy" I said as I pulled my legs closer to me
"No I'm not! It'll be fun! He messed with you, therefor you should mess with him"
I thought about it for a second and she was right. Why should I allow myself to be messed with?
"Ok"
Rae shrieked from joy, "this'll be fun!"

"You planned this before hand, didn't you?" I said as Rae held up a pretty revealing dress. Playboy girls were probably more covered than I would be. The dress was tight and barely came passed my ass.
"It looks great" Rae smiled
I narrowed my eyes "And what's my excuse for wearing it?"
"We say you had a date and then I'll call your phone and you pretend to be talking to him. When you hang up just say that it's been called off cause one of his patients had an emergency"
I laughed at her, "so now I'm dating a doctor?"
"Yeah, we'll say it was my brother" she winked at me
I rolled my eyes, "No one is going to believe that. I wouldn't even believe it and I'm the most gullible person here"
"Trust me, he'll be too focused on how hot you look to even care who you were supposed to go out with"
I sighed and smoothed out the wrinkles at the bottom of the dress. I pushed my curled hair off my shoulders and examined my makeup.
"Was this much makeup necessary?" I asked
She raised an eyebrow at me, "You always liked a lot of makeup, so shut up and suck it up"
Rae stayed in the room while I went downstairs. In 15 minutes she was going to call me and 'call off the date'.
As I walked down the stairs I heard Oliver choke. I looked at him and he was already staring at me.
"Are you alright?" Harry asked him. They were both sitting on the couch and watching some show. Oliver nudged his head in my direction but I kept walking. Harry turned around and his jaw dropped. I never liked dressing up, but if I looked good enough to have that affect on them, then it was worth it. I continued my way into the kitchen and smiled when I saw Andrew.
"Girl you look, how do I say this nicely, oh yeah, you look hot!" Andrew smiled at me
"Thanks, I have a date" I winked at him. He smiled and handed me an iced tea, "Whoever it is, is one lucky guy".
I thanked him as he walked away carrying a tray of some type of food. It was probably for Carmens needy ass. I was just glad Alek was asleep, I didn't have to worry about him being around her right now.
I leaned over the counter, resting my head on my hands. I pulled the back of my dress down slightly when I felt a breeze that I normally didn't feel. This is ridiculous I thought to myself.
"You didn't have to get dressed up for me" Harry whispered into my ear as he gently placed his hands on my hips. I ignored his comment and walked around the counter, grabbing a cookie and sitting down. The expression on his face rendered complete shock.
I took a bite of the cookie, "It's not for you. I have a date."
"With who?" He sounded mad. He had no reason to be mad, he had a girlfriend and it wasn't me.
I laughed but didn't respond. Instead I got up and walked to the living room, taking a seat next to Oliver. Harry followed me and sat down on the other side of me. I groaned in annoyance when I realized I was trapped in between them.
"You look good" Oliver said
Harry glared at him.
"Thanks" I smiled a little too nicely.
We all kept our attention on the TV, no one spoke. I started to tap my leg impatently, Rae was supposed to call by now.
"Nervous?" Oliver said as he looked at my leg. I felt insecure under his gaze, my legs were too exposed to feel comfortable with someone looking at them.
"No, just excited for the date" I lied.
Harry took a deep breath. I noticed his hands tensed next to me.
All of a sudden my phone started vibrating. Both of the guys looked down at me, "Your chest is vibrating" Harry smirked
I reached down into my bra and pulled out my cell phone.
"Hey babe" I said sweetly into the phone. I got up and walked to the other side of the living room so that they couldn't hear onto the other line. I felt their eyes burning into my back. Then I heard a loud smack and I turned to see what happened. I held back my laughter when I realized Harry smacked Olivers arm, probably for staring at me. Olliver held his bicep and gave Harry a 'wtf' look.
I pretended to have a conversation with my 'date' over the phone.
"That's okay, don't worry about it babe.........Next week? I don't know if I can make it next week........ Yes, I'll check my schedule. I think I have a day off next friday..... Okay perfect. Bye" I hung up the phone and sat on the couch that was empty. I watched the TV in silence.
"Is everything okay?" Harry asked
"Yeah. My date had to reschedule"
"Aww did you get stood up?" Carmen asked as she entered the room.
I laughed, "No. He had to rush to the ER. One of his patients had an emergency. He was the only doctor they trusted. But he asked me out again for next friday. Sorry to dissapoint you Carmen" I smirked.
She rolled her eyes and sat next to Harry.
"You scored a doctor? Nice going Z" Oliver said
I smiled and looked at Harry. Our eyes met but he didn't look away. His lips were pressed tightly together, and his breathing got heavy. I knew that only happened when he was mad. He lost his temper fast and I witnessed it first hand when I had to drive in the car with him.
I felt uneasy so I turned my attention back onto the screen. Ten minutes later Rae came skipping down the steps with a huge smile on her face, "Alek is finally asleep," she cheered, it was supposed to be her excuse for being in the room, "Zoe why aren't you on the date?"
"Your brother had to go to the ER, his patient had an emergency" I lied.
She pretended to be worried as she sat down next to me, "Was it the little boy again?"
I nodded my head and pretended to know what she was talking about. We were actually pretty good at this lying thing.
"Your brother?" Oliver asked
Rae had this funny way of talking with her hands, they went flying in the air in exageration as she spoke"Yeah I set them up. He said she was the most beautiful girl he's ever seen, and I had to help him out or he would have lost his mind. Now when theyre together he like pampers her 24/7. They're too inlove, it's adorable"
I nudged her with my elbow to let her know to cool it on the lies. Pretending to date him was okay but pretending to be inlove wasn't. She smiled at me apologetically.
Harry instantly got off the couch and went out on the patio. Carmen tried to follow him but Oliver grabbed her hand and made her sit down, "sometimes he just needs some fresh air" oliver said.
I looked at Rae and felt bad, the thought of him mad sounded great but now that I actually saw him and his eyes, I felt horrible.
Rae noticed my expression, "Zoe, do you mind getting me some food from the kitchen. And my jacket. I left it somewhere over there but I'm exhausted after getting Alek to bed"
I smiled and nodded. I got up and walked through the kitchen and straight onto the patio. Harry was sitting on the stairs with his head bent, playing with the rings on his fingers.
I sat beside him, pulling my dress down slightly. I mentally cursed myself for wearing it.
I turned to Harry and spoke softly "Are you okay?"
"Never been better" he huffed
I exhaled deeply and shook my head, "Ok". I didn't want to push him into talking if he didn't want to. I stood up to walk back inside but he grabbed my leg. I looked at him but his head was still focused on his other hand. I sat back down.
He looked at me and examined my outfit. Then he shook his head again, "You shouldn't wear that for a guy you barely know. Doctor or not, you should respect youself more."
"I respect myself plenty Harry. I respect myself enough to not let a guy use me and pretend it never happened."
He furrowed his eyebrows and met my eyes.
"I respect myself enough to move on when the guy I liked makes it official with someone else." I paused for a second, "I'll see you later" I finished as I got up.
"Zoe wait" Harry called after me. I didn't bother waiting, I just walked back to where Rae was.
"I'm tired. I'll see you guys in the morning"
Rae looked at me but didn't question my motives, "Alright, I'll retire to bed soon anyways. Leave the door unlocked"
I nodded and went into my room.
Alek was cuddled up in the bed covers. It made me smile seeing him so peaceful. I sighed as I changed into pajamas. Alek really was different than the other Cline men. I just hoped he stayed like that.

"Your brother?" Oliver asked
Rae had this funny way of talking with her hands, they went flying in the air in exageration as she spoke"Yeah I set them up. He said she was the most beautiful girl he's ever seen, and I had to help him out or he would have lost his mind. Now when theyre together he like pampers her 24/7. They're too inlove, it's adorable"
I nudged her with my elbow to let her know to cool it on the lies. Pretending to date him was okay but pretending to be inlove wasn't. She smiled at me apologetically.
Harry instantly got off the couch and went out on the patio. Carmen tried to follow him but Oliver grabbed her hand and made her sit down, "sometimes he just needs some fresh air" oliver said.
I looked at Rae and felt bad, the thought of him mad sounded great but now that I actually saw him and his eyes, I felt horrible.
Rae noticed my expression, "Zoe, do you mind getting me some food from the kitchen. And my jacket. I left it somewhere over there but I'm exhausted after getting Alek to bed"
I smiled and nodded. I got up and walked through the kitchen and straight onto the patio. Harry was sitting on the stairs with his head bent, playing with the rings on his fingers.
I sat beside him, pulling my dress down slightly. I mentally cursed myself for wearing it.
I turned to Harry and spoke softly "Are you okay?"
"Never been better" he huffed
I exhaled deeply and shook my head, "Ok". I didn't want to push him into talking if he didn't want to. I stood up to walk back inside but he grabbed my leg. I looked at him but his head was still focused on his other hand. I sat back down.
He looked at me and examined my outfit. Then he shook his head again, "You shouldn't wear that for a guy you barely know. Doctor or not, you should respect youself more."
"I respect myself plenty Harry. I respect myself enough to not let a guy use me and pretend it never happened."
He furrowed his eyebrows and met my eyes.
"I respect myself enough to move on when the guy I liked makes it official with someone else." I paused for a second, "I'll see you later" I finished as I got up.
"Zoe wait" Harry called after me. I didn't bother waiting, I just walked back to where Rae was.
"I'm tired. I'll see you guys in the morning"
Rae looked at me but didn't question my motives, "Alright, I'll retire to bed soon anyways. Leave the door unlocked"
I nodded and went into my room.
Alek was cuddled up in the bed covers. It made me smile seeing him so peaceful. I sighed as I changed into pajamas. Alek really was different than the other Cline men. I just hoped he stayed like that.
This story is addicting!!!! Can't wait for another chapter :)!
