When You Let Your Heart Win
The second Teddy and Louis walked through the main entrance of Royal Hospital, Teddy wrapped her arm around Louis' before they could blink. She knew by how silent he had been ever since he got that call from Lani that he was freaking out and keeping it locked up. She wanted to remind him that she's there. That she's there for it all.
Little did she know, he was on edge. Not from becoming a father to a child with someone who is not Teddy, let alone a girl he doesn't love anymore, that is if he actually really loved Eleanor. Since he met Teddy all those years ago, she was like the most elegant thing in this whole world. He felt the magnetic pull to her the second she was seated beside him and spoke to him for the first time. 'Hello.' That's all she had to say to get him to know he wanted, let alone needed to know who was this beautiful bird who was seated beside him. Giggling at him like a complete mad man whenever he got yelled at for not paying attention, because he was too busy watching her. Studying her every move. He knew it then that she'd change his life and make it better, he just didn't know in which way until Hannah slapped him with the truth after moving Teddy in, instead of his long term girlfriend.
Whenever he went to make his move on Teddy, she always thought she'd fit better with one of the other lads, mostly Harry or Zayn, anyone but him, so he went out, got drunk and met Eleanor. He thought she was fit enough and could make him happy, so they exchanged numbers and got to know each other. And the rest, you know, Louis getting a girlfriend who acted like her shit didn't stink, didn't set well with Teddy, but he kept El around because he thought he was in love.
Then the night Louis told Teddy how he felt, he never looked or thought of Eleanor in a romantic way since. He let her back in after Teddy and her blow up just because he knew he messed up with Teddy and because he didn't want to be alone. Louis Tomlinson hates being alone. But he was on edge because he was and is afraid Teddy will walk into the room, see El and leave him because she thinks she's coming between a family. But all those doubts went away the second she wrapped her arm around his and whispered 'you can do this, boo' in his ear.
After walking up to the main desk and receiving the room number they were needed in, they headed towards the lifts. Silent as ever, but with how tight Teddy's grip was getting on his arm, he knew if either of them said anything right now, he'd drag her out of the hospital and run away from everything and just be together. They were both thinking it, but neither would admit it because they knew sticking around for baby Shayla is the best thing.
The second they stepped foot into the room, Teddy held her breath, let go of his arm and watched him walk over to a sweaty and slightly terrified looking Eleanor, while she stayed by the door, standing awkwardly since she only really knew Louis and El.
Eleanor's parents had flown in from their holiday all the way in Puerto Rico. Since I'm sure they left the second Lani called and broke the news, they jumped on a plane, while Teddy and Louis stayed until noon.
Eleanor's mother was by her side the second she walked in the door. Giving her ice chips, coaching her through a contraction or just petting back her hair to sooth her as her father was sitting at the foot of the bed giving Eleanor a foot massage.
Everything just made Teddy feel more unwelcomed and to think Eleanor is still the spoiled little brat that came somewhere out of Manchester.
After about a half hour, Teddy finally got the courage and slowly made her way over to the side of the room Louis was on, but moved to look out the widow, that over looked the city, so she wouldn't bother him and let him sit and be there for Eleanor. Even though she didn't like it, she knew he needed to be there with her. Teddy doesn't like Eleanor, yes, but she would never keep someone she loves away from something they need to be around for.
Comforting Eleanor was something Teddy knew she couldn't do and even if she could, she wouldn't feel comfortable with it. She had Lani, wherever she was at the moment, and her parents for that. Teddy was only here to support Louis. She knew her being here made him less anxious, but what she doesn't know, Louis isn't anxious to be a father, he's not scared, he just doesn't want to be a father to anyone's baby that isn't Teddy and he's mentally debating with himself on whether to be a good boyfriend or a good father he knew he'd be to any child he'd bring into this world.
"Oh my God, ow!"
"Breathe, baby breathe."
"When will she just come out?" El cried, throwing her head back as she did.
"You're almost there, love." El's mum smiled, petting her hair back.
This is awkward. I honestly believe I should be out in the waiting room, but the second I went to move, Louis pulled me back. It's almost like he can hear my thoughts and I really don't want him to hear them right now.
Half of me is cursing him for doing this to me, then the other half is cursing him for doing this to Eleanor. Child birth... well the labour looks horrid. I don't know how mums back in the old days did it without the drugs. As much as I'd like to have a natural childbirth, my mum said it hurt like hell and to get the epidural. If not, with my low tolerance to pain, I'd pass out. Childbirth is scaring me out of wanting kids.
"Hmm?" I hummed and looked over my shoulder whenever I felt Louis place his hands on my waist.
"You okay?" He whispered.
"Yeah." I nodded looking back out at the city.
"I shouldn't be in here." I whispered turning around and leaned up against the window's ledge. "This is a private thing between you two. I should be in the waiting room or at home."
"No, you should be here." El's voice was heard. "Teddy, you're keeping him calm. That's all I want right now."
"This just feels wrong to me." I frowned looking between her and her parents.
"This wouldn't feel wrong if you didn't break them up." El's mum spat. And here we go. I've actually been waiting for this.
"Mum, stop." El snapped. "Get over it. I have. We can't do anything about it. They're happy together."
"See, I should just go wait outside." I went to move again, but Louis just pushed me back onto the window sill.
"No." He growled. "Ignore them. You're not here for them."
"Yeah, because I'm only here for you." I fought.
"And that's not enough?" He asked.
"It is, I just feel really uncomfortable."
"I want Teddy in here and I'm pretty sure you're the one making her uncomfortable. Leave." El repeated.
"Wait, no, don't do that." I shook my head and got up and closer to El. "I'll just… I'll just suck it up. She deserves to be in here. This is her first grandchild. Don't take that away from her."
"You're right, Elle, she does have a heart." Eleanor's dad smiled at me as Louis stood beside me and slipped his right hand into my back pocket.
"Should I take that as a compliment?" I half laughed looking between the two.
"Take it how you like, love." He smiled. "I know you two aren't the closest of people but knowing she'd rather kick her own mum out other than you, it tells me you're not that bad of a person."
"She just tells you how it is." El laughed. "It may come out really mean, but what she says is usually the truth."
"Alright, love, last push."
"Oh thank God." El laughed as hard as her exhausted body would let her before she gripped onto her mum's and Lani's hands and got ready to push.
"Ready?" The doctor asked looking up at El and when she nodded, her face went all red again and started pushing again, as I moved further behind Louis and dug my face in between his shoulder blades and gripped the sides of his shirt, trying to control my breathing and block out how much pain Eleanor is going through. I seriously envy her right now. Not just because she's having Louis' baby, but for the fact she's doing so good without the medication. I'd envy anyone who could go through this without it, but still.
The second I heard El throw herself back against the bed and stop screaming from the pushing and the pain, then a few seconds later a baby's cry was heard, Louis tensed up and I started to cry.
"You did so good, babe." El's mum said. I bet with a big smile on her face. "She's beautiful."
"Who wants to cut the cord?" I heard the doctor say and I pushed at Louis to go do it, but he held his ground. He wasn't moving an inch. "Louis?"
"If I move, I think I'll be ill, mate." He shook his head and reached behind him and grabbed my waist. "Sorry."
"It's understandable... Mum of the new mum?"
"Is that okay with you, hunny?" El's mum asked.
"Yeah." She sounded so tired. "Hurry up, I want to hold her."
"Bear?" Louis whispered, and from the movement his body just made, he turned his head to look back at me.
"I-I'm fine." I whispered just to feel him pull away from me and wrap his arms around my shoulders and pull me against him.
"I'm sorry." He whispered in my ear.
"It's okay." I shook my head. "Congratulations, boo."
"That should be you." He whispered pulling back and placed my head between his hands. "I'm sorry, Bear."
"It's okay." I repeated shaking my head.
"I'm going to take her to get her checked and make everything's okay." The doctor announced, making everyone look up at her.
"What? I haven't held her yet." El sat up slightly straighter and looked between her doctor and mum.
"El, sweetie, you had preeclampsia, we have to make sure the baby wasn't harmed in anyway."
"Oh." She looked down and frowned.
"It won't take long, I promise."
"Can Louis go with you?" El looked at us real quick, then back at her doctor.
"That'll be okay." She nodded.
"No, I'm fine here." Louis shook his head.
"Go see your daughter." I looked at him like he was mad.
"No." He scrunched his face up.
"Louis, go." I growled and pushed him. "I'm fine. El wants you with her and you should be with her. Go."
"I love you." He frowned stepping closer to me again and wiped my face.
"I love you." I repeated and pushed him again. "I'm fine. Go."
"Give her a kiss for me, please, Lou?" El asked softly.
"Yeah." He nodded looking away from me and looked at El. "Get some rest while she's getting looked at, yeah?"
"Deal." She nodded with a small smile before El's doctor, Louis and baby Shayla walked out the door. Leaving me with El and her parents and Lani. This will be awkward.
"Can you all give me a minute with Teddy?" El asked, making me snap my attention to her.
"What?" I asked. "What for?"
"I just want to talk. Nothing major." She smiled then looked at her parents and Lani. "Please? It'll be a nice, small chat."
"Then after this 'small chat' you need to get some rest. You won't be getting any for the next 18 years, you know." Her mum warned.
"I know, mum." She rolled her eyes, before her mum leaned down to kiss her cheek, then the three walked out the door as I stood there. Awkwardly.
"So… what do you want to talk about…?"
OMG what do you think the conversation is going to be???
