Down That Road
Chapter Five
I didn't know where we were headed. I stared out the window trying to figure out how I got into this in the first place when it dawned on me that I hadn't even told him my name.
"Do you know my name?" I asked and then felt foolish for asking such a dumb question.
"Of course," Zayn chuckled. "Rylee Andrew, the new girl from New York." He looked at me and smiled. It was so adorable. The car came to a stop. Zayn got out and motioned for me to come along. We were standing in front of a small pizza shop.
"I wanna introduce you to some of my friends," he said. I stopped walking. Did I want to meet them?
Zayn sighed. "You know, not everything you hear is true. And they don't bite. I promise."
I hesitated but he left me no choice but to follow him.
Zayn's P.O.V
"You know, not everything you hear is true. And they don't bite. I promise," I told Rylee. If the boys were here, they'd probably piss their pants laughing at that remark. Biting is probably the one thing they love doing.
She was hesitant but she followed me into the pizza parlour. It's not the kind of place she'd usually go to. I could tell that she was afraid.
I spotted Louis and Niall way at the back.
"What do you want? The wings here are delicious," I told Rylee. She was standing close enough that I could smell her shampoo. It was watermelon and kiwi. I remembered the fluttery feeling I had felt when I grabbed her arm at school.
"Um... I think I'll just get a single cheese slice and diet coke," she said to the person behind the counter. I knew she was holding back because she was with me. Because she didn't want me to think she was fat.
I suppressed a sigh. Girls. The one thing that man will never ever, ever understand.
Rylee reached into her bag pulling out her wallet. I gently put my hand on her arm to stop her.
"My treat," I said.
"What? No, I'll pay for myself," she replied pulling her hand away.
"No you won't," I said. I pulled out a ten pound bill and handed it to the cashier.
"I don't even know you! Why are you going to pay for my food?" She snapped and her rosy lips formed a pout.
I leaned close to her and she froze.
"Then get to know me," I whispered kind of seductively into her ear.
I knew she would be hard to get because she was stubborn. I sensed the stubbornness and confidence when I first saw her in English this morning.
I pulled back and laughed at her expression. "Foods here. Come on."
I took both her and my tray and headed towards the back. She followed me muttering all kinds of foul things.
"Hey mates," I greeted the boys. Rylee stood half hidden behind me. "This is Rylee."
I turned to face Rylee. "Meet Niall-" I paused and pointed at him who greeted her with a pleasant smile and a hello in his thick Irish accent. "And this is Louis."
"Hi," Rylee smiled. Her body relaxed as she took in the fact that we weren't going to murder her. I still can't believe she thought that.
Being the gentleman I was, I pulled out a chair for her. She sat and didn't bother thanking me.
"Are you new here?" Louis started the conversation.
"Uh, yeah... Just moved here from New York," Rylee replied.
"Cool," and que the awkward moment.
"I'm going to the washroom," Rylee said after a while and left.
"Zayn! What the hell, mate?" Niall spoke in a hushed tone. I shrugged and leaned back in my seat.
"Just harmless fun, Niall," I said. I made sure I was thinking the most vulgar thoughts about her knowing they would peer into my mind.
"Yeah right," Louis said. "You're smitten."
"I just met her. I can't be 'smitten'," I quoted the word.
"A normal person can't be. You can," Louis said. "It's the whole mate for life shit."
"I'm just looking for some harmless fun, Louis. She's the new girl in town. I just plan on showing her some places and reasons to stay," I smirked.
"That's what Niall said when he met Steph," Louis thumped Niall on the back. Niall grinned back.
"But this girl is pure human," Niall said. I narrowed my eyes at him. He put his hands up, not looking for a fight. "I'm just saying be careful. Nothing else."
I nodded as I saw Rylee approach us.
"We should go. I don't want to be late for classes on my first day," she picked up her garbage.
"Right," I said getting up.
The boys stood up too. Niall stretched out his hand.
"It was a pleasure meeting you, Rylee." He smiled.
"Nice meeting you too," she shook his hand.
Louis went around and gave her a tight squeeze that clearly took her by surprise.
"See you soon!" They waved as we left.
"Friendly bunch," she said after we got into the car.
"Yeah. Glad you liked them," I stopped at a red light.
"I didn't say I liked them. I said they were friendly," she remarked. I looked at her and she gave me a sweet smile and giggled. The sound was intoxicating.
I let her out in front of the school.
"See you tomorrow," I called. Rylee waved, indicating she heard me.
As I watched her go, Louis' words replayed in my head.
"You're smitten."
