What I Don't Remember
The Party
“No one is going to believe this.” He said, as we approached the house where the party was being held. I squeezed his hand tighter and whispered in his ear.
“Yes they are, just stay in character.”
He stood up a little straighter and for a moment his nerd persona was actually believable. When we got to the door I took one last look at him. The sweater vest I had borrowed from my dad’s wardrobe fit him well and suddenly I felt proud to be introducing him as my boyfriend for the evening.
“Don’t forget to act like you’re in love with me.” I said, kissing him lightly on the cheek, “They are supposed to believe that you’re my boyfriend.”
He nodded and then we slipped quietly threw the door. When we reached the other side we were greeted by Taisie who was soaked in her own sweat.
“Paris, I’m so glad you made it!” She said, pulling me in for a hug. I assumed she was drunk because she could barely stand on her feet and her breath reeked of alcohol.
“Who is this?” She asked, looking up at Harry.
“Marcel, he’s my boyfriend.”
“Oh, right.” She said, winking at me, before showing us around the house. We had just gotten to the room where all the action was taking place when she held up two red cups.
“Would you care for a drink, Marcel?” She asked, shoving the cup in his face.
“No, I’m fine.” He said, in his impressive American accent.
“What about you, Paris?”
“No thanks. I don’t drink.”
“Since when? The old you used to drink.” She pouted.
“Well, the new me doesn’t.” I grabbed Harry’s arm and led him to the area where everyone was dancing. I wrapped my arms around his neck and then began to scan the area for Jade.
“I don’t see her anywhere.” I said.
“Who?”
“The bitch who almost got me suspended.”
Harry chuckled.
“Oh you mean the girl who influenced your decision to have me come here dressed as a nerd?” His British accent came through and I almost slapped him.
“Oh my god, Harry. Stay in character.”
He laughed and that was when I spotted Jade in the corner kissing some guy. She stayed there with him for a few minutes before finally spotting me with Harry. She sauntered toward us and for a brief second I thought she had figured it all out.
“Paris, what a pleasant surprise.” She said. Her eyeliner was smeared and her foundation was three shades darker than her actual skin color. She looked up at Harry and grinned. “Who is this?”
I grabbed him by the hand and smiled proudly.
“This is my boyfriend, Marcel.”
Jade’s eyes turned into slits as I planted a kiss on Harry’s cheek. She looked back and forth between the two of us and I noticed that her eyes had darkened. I was just about to say something when Taisie bumped into Jade from behind, spilling her drink in the process.
“I’m so sorry.” She groaned.
“It’s alright.” Jade said, never breaking eye contact with Harry. She grabbed him by the arm, and I felt his hand break away from mine. “Marcel I would like to show you something that might interest you.”
I reached out to bring Harry back to me, but he was already gone.
