Uplifting

First Day, First Meeting

I tugged nervously on my backpack straps. I stood in front of my beat up car, embarrassed because every one else had brand new cars. I sighed and walked up closer to my new school. There were a few people loitering around outside, even though it was hot as hell outside. They were all wearing expensive looking clothes. I obviously didn't fit in wearing my slightly worn out black TOMS, white shorts and red University of Wisconsin tee shirt. I insecurely tucked my dark brown hair behind my ears and avoided eye contact as I walked inside.

A blast of cold air hit me as I entered the school. The difference was amazing, AC was definitely going to be a plus at this school. Another plus was that the school was gorgeous. The floors, lockers, everything was shining. I noticed a sign that pointed me towards the office, so there I went.

There was only the middle aged secretary in there, which I thought was weird until I realized that it was the middle of the school year and it was only my first day. "Hi," I said, walking up to her desk. "My name is Roxy Bedell, today is my first day."

"Oh, shoot! Today is your first day? We weren't expecting you until next week, dear. Um, I'll be right back." She scurried off into the room marked "Mr. Decker's Office." I stood there by myself awkwardly, until someone walked into the office.

He was tall, like over six feet. He had his wavy brown hair kind of slicked back, and he had on huge glasses. He was wearing a grey button up shirt with a blue knit sweater over, with tight-ish black pants. His aura just read nerd. After I realized I was totally checking him out, I accidentally made eye contact with him. Oh my God, his eyes. I quickly looked away, slightly embarrassed.

The secretary came back right after, smiling at the boy behind me. "Hello, Marcel," then she turned to me. A short, chubby balding man in a suit walked out from the principal's office.

"Hello, Ms. Bedell. My name is Mr. Decker, I'm the principal here. I'm very sorry about this situation. We don't have your schedule ready, unfortunately."

"Oh. Um, I guess that's fine. So what am I supposed to do? Go home, or...?" I asked, nervously playing with the straps on my backpack. I saw the guy try to talk to the secretary out of the corner of my eye, but she was fixated on what the principal was saying.

"No, no, we shouldn't make you do that. Oh, I have an idea! Why don't you follow Marcel to his classes? Is that alright, Marcel?" He turned to Marcel with an expectant look.

"O-oh. I-I guess that would be f-fine," Marcel stuttered, looking as uncomfortable as I was with the situation.

"Perfect! Now if you'll excuse me, I'll get working on your schedule right away, Ms. Bedell. Nice meeting you." And with that, Mr. Decker retreated back into his office.

The secretary gave us a kind but impatient smile, like 'what are you two still doing here?' I took the drift and murmured, "We should probably get going." Marcel stuttered out an agreement and we left the office.

I sighed. Well, this was a fantastic first day.
