Scratching Off the Ink
A Fangirl's Fantasy
Joey entered Tainted Dragon with a giddy smile on her face. She shimmied her way to the sitting area and plopped down.
“Well you are certainly chipper on this rainy Monday morning.” Clark said.
Joey beamed at the bald twenty-something year old. “I woke up happy. First time in forever, too.”
“It’s good to have the old Joey back. Anyway, Eddie Izzard is getting a tattoo here. I call dibs on him.”
Joey’s mouth dropped. “Oh, come on! You always get to tattoo all the cool celebrities!”
Clark pointed his tattoo-covered index finger at her. “You did Russell Brand.”
She wrinkled up her face in disgust. “He’s a fucking loser. Not only that, but he was sleazy as hell, too! Tried to cop a feel.”
“Well,” Clark said with pursed lips. “You do have a spectacular ass. Grade A, if you ask me.”
On normal circumstances, she would’ve punched the hell out of some guy who said that to her. However, Clark was so homosexual that compliments from him felt like true opinions. Either way, she averted her eyes from the heavily tattooed man and said, “Whatever. He was still an asshole.”
Joey had known Clark since her freshman year of university. He was a senior at that time, majoring in Economics. She ran into him at an art exhibition being displayed at University College London. Back then, Joey was just an aspiring artist that was majoring in English Literature. It was Clark that got her into tattooing, a passion that has yet to die. Joey considered Clark one of her closest friends, and he—along with Shela, an exchange student from Indonesia—are the only two friends that know where she lives.
The bell hanging off the door rung as a teenage girl rushed through it. Her hair was wild and extremely curly. It puffed out in all directions but was styled pleasantly. The girl had deep ebony skin and giant brown eyes. Her face was round, making her seem even more youthful. She was dressed in pink from head to toe, sticking out like a sore thumb in the dark colors of the parlor.
“Joanna, Joanna! Guess what?”
“I’m on the job, Kate.” Joey moaned. “What are you even doing here anyway? Aren’t you supposed to be in school? IN HALIFAX?”
“Okay, just listen to me, Joey! So you know that One Direction is having a concert tomorrow, right?”
Joey stared at her blankly. “Why would I ever know that?”
Kate rolled her eyes. “Anyway, the concert is tomorrow night. Mum and Dad said that since my grades are so freaking awesome, they are allowing me to stay at your place so I can go see them!”
Once again, Joey’s jaw dropped. “And no one was going to call and alert me of this? Kate, I just moved into my apartment last night! I don’t even have a spare bed!”
“It was a last minute decision. And that’s fine; I’ll sleep on the couch.”
Joey narrowed her eyes at the starry-eyed adolescent. “I don’t believe Mum and Dad would allow you to travel all the way to London, BY YOURSELF, just to see some dopey concert. Did you sneak out?”
Kate feigned an insulted look. “I would never! I really did get permission to go. I just…twisted my words a little in order to get here.”
“Kate, what did you do?” Joey asked darkly, not liking where this was going.
“I told them you would go with me…” she mumbled.
Joey’s eyes widened wider than she thought were possible. “No! You are not forcing me to sit through that teeny bopper crap!”
Kate fell to her knees and clasped her hands together. “Please! I am begging you; I’ll do whatever you want! I really wanna see my love, Harry! I’ll do anything just please take me!”
Joey poked her cheek with her tongue and sighed. “Fine.”
A flash of pink blurred before her eyes and then suddenly she was being squeezed by the little girl. “Thank yoooooou! I love you, big sis! I’ll make it up to you, I promise!”
Joey patted her fluffy head. “Whatever.”
Joey glossed her lips in a vibrant red. She shimmied on some camouflage pants and heavy black boots. She wore a thin long-sleeved black shirt and threw on a rosary. She glanced over to Kate, who was decorating her face in bright and fun colors. Her skirt was too short, her blouse was too high. She was definitely going to attract unwanted attention from men, and Joey didn’t like that.
“Change your outfit.”
Kate pulled the corners of her lips downward. “Whhhyyyy? I look super-hot in this!”
“Exactly.”
Kate furrowed her eyebrows. “Just because you don’t like to show off your body doesn’t mean you get to force me to do the same!”
“Do whatever the fuck you want.” Joey said, exasperated. If Kate boo-hooed because she got felt up by some creep Joey was not going to feel any sympathy.
The sisters hopped into Joey’s gray car and drove off to the London Arena O2. Traffic was insane and Joey was glad that she decided to leave early. Before she was even half way to the arena she saw fangirls plaguing the sidewalks.
“Jesus Christ…” she muttered.
“My sisters!” Kate clawed at the window.
Joey ignored her overdramatic sister and found a parking space that was about three blocks away from the arena. Kate complained about walking so far but immediately shut up with Joey gave her a warning glare. They waited in line for what seemed like an hour and a half before they entered the arena and took their seats front row.
How the hell did this little girl land front row seats? Joey thought.
She was already sweating in this crowded atmosphere. Joey usually enjoyed the wild behavior at concerts. She loved the shouting, the crowd surfing, and the obnoxious singing. What she didn’t like about this particular concert was the eardrum-damaging and shrill screaming. The concert hadn’t even started yet.
“I LOVE YOU, ONE DIRECTION!” Kate hollered on the top of her lungs.
Joey winced, regretting ever agreeing to Kate’s bogus idea.
When Joey’s clock read 8 PM, the lights dimmed. Suddenly, purple neon lights colored the arena. From the generated mist emerged five devilishly attractive young men. The arena went wild. Kate started to cry.
Joey locked her eyes on Zayn, who was smiling mischievously at the melting crowd. “Good evening, London!”
The thousands of girls screamed back in response.
“We are One Direction!” Harry stated.
“I LOVE YOU HARRRYYY!” Kate wailed.
The concert went on and Joey’s ears were filled with generic pop music. However…the generic pop music was kind of catchy. Only slightly.
Joey found herself always following Zayn with her eyes. He had yet to notice her, and honestly, she didn’t expect him to notice her. She just found it interesting how happy he seemed on stage. He reveled in the screams of his fans. He looked just as excited on that stage as he did when he got Perrie tattooed on his arm. Joey found it adorable.
With Kate already crying her makeup off, it was eleven at night and the concert was coming to a close. Joey’s ears were numb and she was tired of being bumped and pushed by a bunch of fourteen year old girls. The girls begged for an encore of a song called Kiss You. The boys, sweaty from singing for multiple hours, warmed themselves up and began to belt out the lyrics of the song.
“Oh I just wanna take you anywhere that you’d like.” Zayn sang. The song continued, with girls singing themselves to oblivion. The song was reaching its end, the concert was reaching its end. Zayn pranced closer and closer to the edge of the stage, gyrating closer and closer to Joey. He kneeled to the crowd and stuck out his hand. The girls all dove for the half-Pakistani’s hand. His eyes scanned the row. And just as Harry sang the last lyric, “And let me kiss you.” Zayn's eyes landed on Joey.
Joey felt her chest grow heavy and her breath got hitched in her throat. She smiled awkwardly at him as he stared awkwardly at her, like a deer caught in headlights. Joey pointed to Kate as explanation on why she was there. Zayn glanced at Kate, grinned, and then stood up, backing away from the edge of the platform. He held Joey’s eyes for a few more seconds before facing to another section of the crowd.
“Thank you for coming tonight!” Louis hollered.
“DO YOU KNOW ZAYN?” Kate hollered into Joey’s ear.
“OF COURSE NOT.” She lied. She couldn’t have her sister knowing that information. All kinds of trouble could brew up.
It took forever to escape the frenzy of hormonal teenage girls. The sisters walked a while back to where they parked the car only to find…
“Where the FUCK is my car?” Joey exclaimed, staring astonished at the empty parking space.
Kate picked up a crumpled piece of paper and gasped, holding her hand against her heart.
“
What is it?” Joey barked, snatching the paper away from her.
Thanks for the new car, One Direction fags! Have fun walking home! The paper read.
Heat broiled inside Joey’s stomach. Her fists shook violently. “I knew I shouldn’t have ever gone to this stupid concert!”
“Joey, I’m sorry!” Kate said.
Joey abruptly turned her head towards Kate, a piercing gaze impaling the younger girl’s eyes.
“You can apologize as we walk aaaaaallll the way to the other side of London to get home.”
“Can’t we take the subway or a bus?”
“I have no damn money!”
Kate bowed her head. Joey was getting tired of making the fifteen-year old feel guilty. She sighed and rubbed Kate’s bare shoulder. Kate looked up, rubbing the tears from her eyes. “I really am sorry.”
“I know you are, love. It isn’t your fault. I’ll try to find a way back home so we don’t spend three hours walking home this late at night.”
Joey called up Clark, only to hear that he was too busy sexing up the new intern at Tainted
Dragon called Derek. She tried calling Shela, but she was currently visiting family in Indonesia and wouldn't land back in London until tomorrow morning. The only available number left on her phone was someone she refused to call in a situation like this.
“Sorry, kid, looks like we’re gonna have to watch each other’s backs and walk home.”
Kate frowned. “I really should have put on more clothing…”
Abruptly, a black van pulled up next to them. Joey latched onto Kate’s arm and pulled her a step away from the van. Joey stared hesitantly at the shady looking vehicle, ready to book it at any sign of danger. The front door window rolled down to exposed the curly haired devil himself.
“Are you Joey?”
Kate’s eyes lit up. Her mouth expanded and Joey foresaw the blood curdling scream she was about to unleash. Joey quickly clamped her hand over Kate’s mouth. “Yeah, that’s me.”
The side door slid open to expose the rest of the gang. They looked more attractive up close.
“Where’s your car?” Zayn asked Joey.
Joey begrudgingly handed Zayn the note the thieves left them. The band members read it internally and then burst with laughter.
“What! What did it say!” Harry whined, trying to look at it from the front seat.
“These scumbags jacked their car. Holy shit, that’s almost as bad as when I got my wallet filled with 2,000 pounds stolen.” Louis guffawed.
Joey crossed her arms and tapped her foot. “So…what are you guys doing here. You are going to be mobbed by fangirls any second now.”
Zayn extended at hand towards her. “We’re willing to drive you guys home.”
“Well, our driver is willing to drive you guys home.” Niall commented.
Joey raised her eyebrows. “Really?”
Zayn nodded his head. “It’s the least I can do.” He flexed his arm, making cartoon Perrie stretch.
Joey shook her head with a smile on her face. “You’re just going to use that excuse until you find another one, aren’t you?”
Zayn didn’t answer and instead helped Joey into the van and then helped her little sister. Joey could tell she was about to explode with excitement.
“So is the little one the Directioner?” Harry asked, smiling cheekily at Kate.
Kate nodded her head furiously. “I’ve been a fan of you guys since you were on X Factor! I’m such a huge fan!”
Harry gently held Kate’s hand. “Well, I think we’re all glad to have such a dedicated fan.” Joey could practically see Kate’s mind turning to mush.
“Okay, Romeo, I think you need to chill with the touching.” Joey warned Harry.
The van erupted with laughter and Harry embarrassingly slipped his hand from Kate’s.
“Uh, boys?” the driver called.
The band looked at the driver.
“The way back up to this lady’s apartment is closed off by police. What do you want to do?”
Zayn looked at Liam, Liam looked at Niall, and Niall looked at Louis.
“They can stay at the hotel we’re staying at.” Zayn suggested.
Kate gripped tight onto Joey’s hand. “Like, in a different room?”
Niall awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck. “We really don’t have the power to book another room. You guys would be staying in one of our rooms, if it doesn’t make you uncomfortable…”
Joey groaned. Why was so complicated? She just wanted to go home and sleep on her mattress and wake up to go to work tomorrow. She didn’t ask to sleep in some fancy hotel with a boy band.
“Joey, please! It isn’t like we have any other option!”
“Okay, let’s say I agree. Fans are going to know which hotel you are staying at, because fans are creepy like that. They are going to see you guys bring two girls up to your room. How in the world does that look good for you or for me?”
Zayn crawled over Louis to sit beside Joey and catch her gaze. He elbowed her arm in a friendly gesture. “We’re the masters of stealth. We won’t let you guys be seen.”
“Okay, Zayn, explain to me how you guys would go about doing this.” Joey said, placing her hands on her hips.
Louis chuckled. “I like this girl. What’s your name again?”
“Joey.”
Louis nodded his head and eyed her in a peculiar way. “I’m definitely going to your tattoo parlor for my next tattoo.”
Zayn glared at Louis to get him to shut up and then cleared his own throat. “We will let you girls out first. You guys will take an elevator to the fifteenth floor. Our driver will drive around two times before letting us out. We’ll take the elevator and meet you in front of it. From there, we’ll take you to our room. Sound like a plan?”
Joey sighed. “I don’t see any other ways.”
“Well you are certainly chipper on this rainy Monday morning.” Clark said.
