Memories or Nightmares?

THIS IS A CHAPTER TOO-- Meeting Kat

"So I heard that you started to walk yesterday," Storm commented while she stabbed a piece of spinach with her fork, "How did that go?"

"Pretty well," I responded, "I mean, I still feel pretty weak, but everyone is convinced that I will be walking in no time." At this point, I was pushing around the chicken pieces that laid on the salad that Storm brought me.

She looked up and began to watch me, "What's up? Not hungry?"

I shrugged, "Not really." I didn't know why, but food (in general) just wasn't appetizing to me. It made me feel a pit in my stomach. And every time I looked at it, I wanted to throw up.

She frowned a little at my response then tapped lightly on my arm, "C'mon."

"Where are we going?"

"I want you to meet someone."

Storm wheeled me down numerous hallways and made so many turns that it made my head spin. This girl really knew her way around the hospital.

We stopped at room 3096 on the 5th floor.

"Wait out here." She parked the wheelchair outside the door and put the brakes on. Then, she entered the little room and inside I heard her talking to one of the patients. Just as she was talking, a kid passed me on a hospital bed. He was sitting up, around the age of 8, and wore a purple beanie to keep his bald head warm. He looked over at me, and even though he looked sickly and pale, he gave me one of the biggest, gap-filled smiles that I have ever seen. I waved at him and smiled back. He turned back around and my smile slowly turned to sadness. By the look the nurse gave me while she pushed him along, I could tell that bad news was in his future.

He was a cancer patient. And my heart broke at the sight.

We must be on the cancer patient floor.

"Okay, we can go in now." Storm's voice brought me out of my thoughts as she continued to wheel me into the room.

There was only a single bed up against the wall, and the girl who occupied it was around my age with bright red hair. She smiled at me eagerly and sat up, crossing her legs when she did. Her hospital attire consisted of her favorite band tee, plaid pajama pants, and bright, florescent, green slippers.

"Hi, you must be Dani," Her smile stayed in place as she shook my hand, "I'm Kat."

I returned her smile with one of my own, "It's nice to meet you. I love your hair."

"Thanks," She then lifted up her "hair" to reveal that she was bald underneath, "It's a wig." She laughed. "So why did you guys visit me?" Her question wasn't rude, but more curious as she cocked her head to the side.

"Well," Storm began, "Dani looked like she was feeling a little down in the dumps, so I decided to take her to meet you. Since, ya know, you always make me smile." Kat brightened up at that (if it were anymore possible).

"Glad to hear! Well, this is my humble abode. Make yourselves at home."

Even though we were in a hospital room, the walls were disguised with pictures of the Australian band: 5 Seconds of Summer. The room was also filled with stuffed animals, flowers, and get-well gifts of all kinds.

"You like 5SOS?" I asked.

"Like them? I live and BREATHE them." She chuckled, "Sorry, that sounded a lil' creepy. But, ya know, I'm a fangirl. Whatcha gonna do?" She then handed me her iPod, "Yeah, when I go into the MRI machine they play 'Out of My Limit'. It makes the visit less... boring and stressful, ya know?"

I nodded, "I love that song." I said as I glanced around her room. I then noticed various drawings of Disney princesses, Batman, and some (what looked like) "nerdy", Sci-Fi things that I've never seen before. "Did you draw these?" I ask.

"Yep! I did!" She says proudly.

I almost forgot Storm was in the room until she commented, "Yeah, but your favorite is Merida, right, Kat?"

"Are you kidding me? She's more than my favorite. She's my IDOL!" Her response was so enthusiastic that it caused me to involuntarily smile, "That's why I got the red wig," she winked, "But the darn company didn't warn me that it was THIS red", she tugged on a strand and put it directly in front of her face, "That's like firetruck red! ... But I still love it."

The longer Storm, Kat, and I talked, the more I forgot about my problems. My worries. The fact that I couldn't remember a single thing about my personal life. I remembered celebrities and icons, like Batman and 5 Seconds of Summer, but I could not for the life of me remember why or how I got into the hospital.

But Kat would soon change that.
