Family. When I hear that word I feel tears sting my eyes. Family is defined as those who love you...that's what my mother always said. My family was ripped apart and put back together again. We are still family but we will never be whole, never be the same again.
During the year 2014, the US president, Malrick, used his power over everyone. He threatened countries all around the world until he owned every country except Great Britain and Antarctica. For all I know, he probably does own Antarctica even though no one lives on it.
In the year 2015, people predicted the world was going to end. Everyone thought they were crazy. I knew differently. I knew information that only about twenty people know.
The world didn't almost end the way people thought it would. People thought the world would end by global warming or an asteroid or engineered disease or a nuclear war or overpopulation or even an apocalypse. No one thought it would be a war. A war like none other. Well one other. It was like the war in Mockingjay by Susan Collins.
Our Mockingjay was a band. One Direction. They became famous and everyone listened to them. They were super hot and super sweet...who wouldn't listen to that? One Direction consisted of Harry, Liam, Louis, Niall, and Zayn. We decided that they would audition for the X Factor. We wanted to get some of Europe on our side before we tried the US and other countries. They became popular really fast.
The boys did volunteer to be the, unofficial at the time, Mockingjays. Eliza, the president of the society, had to promise things and give them things for their cooperation still.
They were all part of The Society, that's what we call the group of people who think that the presidents, mainly Malrick, are too controlling and cruel. This secret group was formed a while back and has wanted to overthrow all governments. They knew nothing good would come from these governments, especially the United States government, because the governments were being corrupted and not letting people be themselves.
One Direction became famous and the songs were hits. Some people understood the lyrics, mostly adults, some didn't. Most of the people high up in power were ignorant. We were lucky because of that.
My great great great grandpa was one of the founders. My family has been in it ever since. The boys and I have been friends for a while, there aren't many people my age here because this is the command and only the powerful people can stay here. I helped the boys out with their singing, dancing, interviews. Especially interviews because they had to convey a message without giving it away completely.
Niall and I started dating when we were fifteen. We have been a secret from almost everyone since then. We are thinking of finally coming out but we don't know yet. My family, his family, the other boys, and Eliza are the only ones who know. The boys think it is a great idea but my parents, his parents, and Eliza are weary of the idea. They think that when the war starts Malrick will try to capture us to torture us for information.
We finally did come out to everyone. That was about a week before Eliza gave us some shocking news.
That's where it all began. I sometimes wish that none of this ever happened. That I never met Niall. That my great great great grandpa never founded this society. It has brought nothing but pain to most people. There are those that had it good since the beginning. Life is hard even before the war starts. I thought it couldn't get harder.
Until the day our president said that we were almost ready for the war. Everything got much worse. The war that would kill over half of the population, destroy landmarks and buildings all over the world. The war that ripped my family apart and tried to put it back together again. I will never be whole again. I don't think anyone will be. I just hope that this war is not for nothing. I hope that we will all be able to live in peace.
This is a story about love and hatred, war and peace, loyalty and betrayal. This is a story that is hard for me to tell. This is a personal story that...I almost hate myself for. I hate what Malrick was able to do and what I wasn't able to stop.
