What Would You Do?

Hello fellow 1D fans

My name is Mia and I'm 23. I've been working as a Teaching Assistant at an English Primary School since I was Eighteen. We had a staff meeting for Teachers assistants a few weeks back and the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher sprung a rather bizarre rule on us: That we could only wear Leggings.

Now I suffer with colds a lot. I also have Asthma and get ear infections, I live in England so as you can imagine it gets rather cold here in Winter time

When I first started five years ago they never told me about this "rule" and said I could wear jeans as long as they were comfy. I feel like they did it to spite some of the clothing choices we make

What should I do? Should I calmly explain my feelings to the head and deputy head or should I just bend to their will

I'd ask them to explain this choice. I went to public school in Virginia so maybe my sense of what teachers wear is different but none of my teachers wore leggings. It was always slacks, a respectable length skirt, and Fridays were jean days. I can't even begin to imagine the parental outcry here if the teachers HAD to wear leggings.

I'd seriously question this rule if I were you. A) how are leggings better than dress slacks, khakis, and jeans? B) do you really think leggings are appropriate to the current state of the climate? C) what are you going to do when all of your teachers start calling out because they have pneumonia? D) what happens to the teachers who don't conform to this rule right away? E) wtf is this bs, homie?

I say confront them but keep it professional

@MiaAlexatheBae
Typical isn't it, I'm from England and I swear in our schools they make up their rules whenever they feel like it. Though I've never been your position - I don't do teaching and haven't been a student for years!

But definitely question it.. I'd want to know why this has suddenly changed. If you've been wearing them before then what is the harm? Don't keep it inside and just do as your told, ask about it and it may easily have a solution.

Good Luck!

I would ask to be clarified the reasons behind this decision. Will EVERYONE (principal etc) be wearing leggings as well? I don't understand why leggings? I'm not a fan of leggings to begin with. Why anyone would deem leggings appropriate for work is beyond me. That's like workout clothes or relaxing clothes...

I'm not sure if the schools in England do this, but in the U.S., some girls get dress coded for wearing leggings. If leggings are supposedly an article of clothing that needs to be banned in certain schools across America, why isn't it in England? Why must it be mandatory for faculty to wear them?
If you and the other female faculty members are suffering from colds, ear infections, etc. from not being able to dress warmly/appropriately, that's a concern. They should've taken the weather conditions into consideration to begin with before making this policy.
I would bring this up with the Deputy Headteacher and voice the concerns that you have. If they refuse to acknowledge them, boycott it. Refuse to wear leggings and encourage the other faculty members to do so as well.
If all else fails, try looking for fleece-lined leggings. They're not itchy or uncomfortable, they're the opposite. They're also very warm.
I hope all goes well. Good luck to you! (:
