Who knows shit about guitars?

I know we're not even past Halloween but I'd like to get my boyfriend a new guitar for Christmas :D unfortunately my main instrument is clarinet so even though he has my guitar, his own, an acoustic, and his brother's bass, I'd like to get him one that's not a shitty standard Statocaster.

He's really talented and tends to lean to heavier rock stuff like We Are Harlot, Upon a Burning Body, Motionless in White, La Dispute and such while being raised on the classics like the Beatles, Eric Clapton, and Steve Miller. And it means a lot to me simply because I know it means a lot to him. The kid's so busy looking after his friends and taking care of me while planning shit out for the both of us that I thought I'd do this for him. He works six days a week and has class so any time we can just chill with a beer and write stuff is always fun. Even if we're not verbally communicating, it's really fun for me to just watch him create and do something he enjoys.

So I wanna find something quality and not cheesey (mind you I get paid minimum wage so there'd be some saving on my end but considering how much he hints at what he paid for my promise ring and some of the other jewelry he's gotten me, price isn't that big a deal to me). Anybody with ANY knowledge of our six stringed friend is more than welcome to suggest something be it "Mexican make is better than this" or "these strings are better than that". Merci and happy Halloween/early Christmas :D

Does he have a preference on weight? I know that's going to sound stupid but a lighter or heavier instrument can make a huge difference on sound and playing ability (from what my brother has just told me & i at least notice the differences with my bass).

@fifirose
I don't really think he does. If he does, then he's never mentioned it. But we both have just standard Fender Strats that nearly everyone starts off with. What I do know specifically about his guitar preferences is that he likes to tune his guitar a half step sharp so when he's playing and the strings begin to down tune, it falls into a standard tuning. Again, as a woodwind player, I don't know what I'm talking about or if tuning makes much of a difference.

it totally does! or at least on my bass it does. let me ask around for you and i'll get back with an answer and some suggestions asap x
