Story Idea? Which one sounds better?
@vogueharry
Maybe it's because I've met survivors but the Holocaust one sounds more intriguing to me. just please make whichever one you do historically accurate lol
If you end up doing the holocaust story, just make sure that you portray everything in a respectful manner, it is a really tricky theme.
For the Berlin Wall story, remember that the wall was up from '61 till the 9th Nov. '89, so that's nearly 30 years. Also, make sure you know your Berlin details (I grew up nearby, my parents are from the east) and details about the GDR (if he tried to escape and they did not kill him he'd either be in prison for 10 - 25 years or shorter, if West Germany would agree to buy him - it's like prisoner exchange, but the GDR got money instead.)
Just remember, both story ideas touch quite recent events, survivors and their families are still alive today and it is easy to get people pissed off.
I don't know why you want to go for these kind of historic events, I don't know where you are from and if you can understand German, but research will be difficult, if you do it solely in english.
Especially GDR history isn't really that much covered elsewhere in the world. Like the Stasi and their practices and all that. It can be heavy.
@Escapist
Well, my perspective take on this is that if people want to read it then they will, if they get offended by it, they dont have to read it. I have respect for their survivors and their families but if they get mad at me for writing what i want to write... then there is nothing i can do because i want to write these stories.
@vogueharry
bending historic events to your own liking should not be a goal. Write what you want, as long as you know how to do your research and how to pay the events justice.
Please never use history as a convenient way to get an interesting story!
I have written/well am still writing a historic fic and let me tell you, the research is such hard work, if you want to do it realisticly.
I think that's what it comes down to, are you challenging yourself by writing about history, willing to do the needed research or are you using history for the mere chance of creating a dramatic background.
Also you cannot tell people to not read something, so always have in mind that people might criticize your way of handling the events. If you actually didn't to the required research, then they are right.
It is your first story, I guess, so just be sure what you sign up for.
@Escapist
I'm not bending historical events. I know i cant tell people what not to read, because they will do it anyways. I can take criticism. It is not my first story, i have written many stories with historical events and people liked them.
I already did all my research and it wasn't hard what so ever, Maybe it was just easy for me.
@vogueharry
then everything is alright. Your bio stated that you haven't written a story before, hence why I assumed it.
Good luck then.
@Escapist
Thank you, and I appreciate you warning me.
I just don't want it to seem like i don't respect the historical events of the holocaust or the berlin wall being built.
Sorry if i came off defesive x
@vogueharry
It's fine, I was often attacked for writing historic fiction before and I had my research done. I thought it's better to warn you now, so that you don't end up like me, taking down a perfectly fine story due to people sending you hate.
In the end I only got the hate due to jealousy, since they failed to blame me for wrongful representation of the past. I was only done with the anonymous hate, that's why I left.
I wanted to make sure that no one has to go through what I went through.
I have two story ideas and I don't know which one is more interesting!
1.) This story takes place in Berlin. (I know harry isnt from there, but please go with it anyways lol) Harry and (Girl) are engaged and are living a happy life, but one day Harry goes across town for a week for business and during that time they build the Berlin wall, separating the two lovers. A lot of stuff happens, (Him trying to escape, ect.) and then when the wall goes down he goes and finds out that she married his best friend, which causes more problems.
I know these ideas are detailed but you get the idea of them x
2.) This takes place in Poland during the holocaust, Harry and a girl fall in love while in the camp and when everyone is released he cant find her. ten years later when they are both married they come across each other once again and that creates problems with their marriages and life at home.
I know these ideas aren't the best and have probably been done before, but i really want to write one of these! Please help! :)
